About The Position

The Drug Room Supervisor is responsible for overseeing medication management operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant availability of medications throughout the facility. This role coordinates inventory management, controlled substance oversight, automated dispensing system (ADS) operations, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement activities related to medication storage, distribution, and documentation. The Drug Room Supervisor performs controlled substance-related functions under the oversight and delegated authority of the Director of Pharmacy (DOP). Ultimate accountability for controlled substance compliance, security, and regulatory adherence remains with the Director of Pharmacy in accordance with federal and state law.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Nursing or higher preferred.
  • Prior experience in medication management, drug room operations, or supervisory role preferred.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Current RN or LPN license in the applicable state required.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members
  • Strong knowledge of medication management and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to operate and manage Automated Dispensing Systems (ADS)
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Effective leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with electronic medical records

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily drug room operations, including medication availability, storage, and distribution processes
  • Orders medications and supplies from approved vendors and monitors par levels
  • Manages inventory levels based on patient volume and conducts inventory counts
  • Maintains and updates electronic formulary per P&T Committee direction
  • Manages Automated Dispensing Systems (ADS)
  • Serves as liaison with ADS vendors
  • Performs controlled substance handling, documentation, and inventory activities under the direction and oversight of the Director of Pharmacy (DOP)
  • Conducts routine controlled substance counts and reconciliations, with discrepancies immediately escalated to the Director of Pharmacy
  • Facilitates controlled substance returns and destructions in compliance with DEA and state requirements, with required witness documentation
  • Monitors medication expiration dates
  • Conducts audits of medication storage and automated dispensing units
  • Reconciles medication dispensing activity with the Medication Administration Record (MAR)
  • Reviews and acts on medication recalls
  • Ensures accurate charging, billing, and barcode functionality
  • Provides in-service education related to medication safety and ADS
  • Reports medication errors and adverse drug reactions to leadership
  • Completes documentation for leadership reports
  • Performs patient care activities within scope of nursing licensure
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean and wears appropriate identification while on duty

  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patient and/or employee rights are protected.

  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Maintains current licensure/certification for position, if applicable.
  • Consistently demonstrates Guest Relation’s skills to patients, physicians, visitors, employees, and any other individuals with whom they may come in contact.
  • Consistently follows departmental and hospital Health, Safety, Security, Hazardous Materials policies and procedures.
  • HIPAA: Conduct job responsibilities in accordance with HIPAA privacy laws, follow hospital policy in provision of patient confidentiality. Able to identify patient confidentiality issues and reports to proper hospital personnel immediately.
  • Compliance: Conducts job responsibilities in accordance with standards set forth in Kindred’s Code of Conduct, Kindred policy and procedures, applicable federal and state laws, and applicable standards.
