About The Position

This position oversees facility operations, vivarium equipment, and animal laboratory processes. The supervisor directly manages 6-15 husbandry personnel and assists the Facility Manager in the overall management of the animal care and husbandry program. This program must adhere to the regulations and guidelines of the Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service, and University policies to ensure a high-quality animal care program that supports research and teaching at WashU.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the Animal Care Staff responsible for the daily care of research animals.
  • Manage up 15 direct reports, including interviewing, on-the-job training, performance management and evaluation, career development discussions and oversight of employee work schedules and attendance.
  • Ensure that the established SOPs are properly executed and department policies are followed.
  • Schedule daily activities and distribute workload to staff.
  • Train the husbandry staff on SOPs and in daily duties.
  • Accountable for monitoring and managing employee work performance and associated files.
  • Provide PI and lab staff facility walk through and barrier training.
  • Supervisor may assist with technical procedures including animal identification, breeding and euthanasia.
  • Conduct or oversee census and quality assurance activities in the facility.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the facility manager or the department.
