The Office of HPD Tech leads the agency’s effort to transform HPD through technology by promoting productivity and eliminating manual processing, shrinking costs, and increasing the pace of work. HPD Tech works to improve effectiveness of business processes using core applications for flawless execution. HPD Tech empowers decision makers with access to quality (complete and accurate) information to anticipate and pro-actively react to building, neighborhood and market conditions. The Office of HPDTech is composed of 7 units: CIO (Chief Information Office), CTO (Chief Technology Office), CPO (Chief Product Office), Budget, Enterprise Architecture, Planning & Compliance, and Information Security. Your Impact: As the Data Engineering and Artificial Intelligence Intern for the Division of HPD Tech, you will learn how large- scale data systems and AI solutions are built and used in real-world environments. Your Role: The intern will work alongside experienced engineers and Developers on projects involving data pipelines, analytics, and introductory AI/ML applications.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in: o Computer Science o Data Science o Information Technology o Engineering or related field
  • Coursework or hands-on experience with: o Python or another programming language o SQL o BI Tools such as Power BI, Tableau, etc.
  • Basic understanding of data concepts and databases.
  • Interest in data engineering, analytics, and AI/ML.
  • Exposure to machine learning concepts through coursework or projects.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position.
  • Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they meet all qualifying requirements for this position at the time of application.
  • As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
  • NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with tools such as pandas, NumPy, or scikit-learn.
  • Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau
  • Experience with Git or other version control tools.
  • Understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is a plus.
  • Strong Excel or data visualization skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Willingness to learn new technologies
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail and data quality
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks

Responsibilities

  • Assist in building and maintaining basic data pipelines (ETL processes).
  • Write and optimize SQL queries to extract and analyze data.
  • Help clean, validate, and transform datasets for analytics and reporting.
  • Support documentation of data flows and data definitions.
  • Assist with data preparation and feature engineering for AI/ML models.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis using Python.
  • Help test and evaluate basic machine learning models.
  • Support visualization and reporting of model results.
