About The Position

This position is responsible for helping to address the medical and emotional needs of students and staff on a daily as-needed basis. The Health Room Assistant works as a team member with the school nurse, intervention specialist, counselor, principal, teachers, and parents. The District represents a diverse community with a population of more than 50% of students with diverse backgrounds, and seeks an individual who has successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, demonstrating a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication with diverse populations. The Health Room Assistant works under the supervision of a school nurse or administrator, who assigns specific responsibilities, provides policy and procedural direction and guidance, and is available in more difficult situations and emergencies. The Health Room Assistant must follow and comply with local and state codes and appropriate health authority requirements. This role delivers health services and support to students and meets health screening, reporting, and record-keeping requirements. This is a standard position description to be used for positions with similar duties, responsibilities, classification and compensation. Requirements

  • MUST BE A CURRENT EMPLOYEE WITH THE DISTRICT
  • Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Either an Associate’s Degree or successfully passing the written Educational Testing Service competency examination.
  • Must be trained in CPR and First Aid.
  • CPR and defibrillator training may be required.
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Ability to interact with students, parents, staff, and community members, personally and through electronic communications, in a warm and confident manner.
  • Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision making capabilities are essential.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all school and personnel matters.
  • Possess a valid Washington state driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Ability to transport students in district-owned vehicles when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare immunization records, work with families to register with medication needs, doctor’s orders, and medically high-risk students.
  • Assist with communicable disease control including classroom inspections for head lice.
  • Assist with school-wide health screenings including schedules, records, materials and supplies.
  • Follow up on health care referrals by health specialist and assist families in accessing needed services.
  • Record health information in individual student health records.
  • Assist with maintenance of site lists of significant health conditions, student exemptions, and students receiving medication.
  • Administers first aid and student medications when school nurse is not available and does so consistent with doctor and parental direction and school policies.
  • May provide colostomy care including emptying colostomy bags and cleaning of the skin.
  • May provide catheterization.
  • May administer tube feedings and/or medication(s) as authorized by the school nurse and supervisory staff.
  • May provide health services and assistance to include changing dressings, assisting with oxygen, assisting with insulin, assisting with nebulizers or inhalers, and assisting with walkers, wheelchairs, canes, crutches.
  • Maintain and update centralized records and materials.
  • Order centralized supplies and forms.
  • Complete required statistical reports.
  • Maintain and monitor supplies for classroom diabetes kits and field trip first aid kits.
  • Administer specialized physical health care services under the supervision of the school nurse when site level staff is unavailable, using standard procedures.
  • Adhere to requirements for confidentiality regarding students’ records; discreetly handle sensitive information pertaining to staff, parents and students.
  • Operate a computer to input, retrieve, and file data and text.
  • Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
