About The Position

This position is responsible for helping to address the medical and emotional needs of students and staff on a daily as-needed basis. Works as a team member with the school nurse, intervention specialist, counselor, principal, teachers, and parents. The District represents a diverse community with a population of more than 50% of students with diverse backgrounds. We seek an individual who has successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication with the District’s diverse populations.

Requirements

  • Incumbents must have successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Either an Associate’s Degree or successfully passing the written Educational Testing Service competency examination.
  • Must be trained in CPR and First Aid.
  • CPR and defibrillator training may be required.
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Ability to interact with students, parents, staff, and community members, personally and through electronic communications, in a warm and confident manner.
  • Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision making capabilities are essential.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all school and personnel matters.
  • Possess a valid Washington state driver’s license and a safe driving record.
  • Ability to transport students in district-owned vehicles when necessary.

  • Experience administering first aide to ill or injured children.
  • Post high school education and/or training in health care and emergency medical treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with communicable disease control including classroom inspections for head lice.
  • Assist with school-wide health screenings including schedules, records, materials and supplies.
  • Follow up on health care referrals by health specialist and assist families in accessing needed services.
  • Record health information in individual student health records.
  • Assist with maintenance of site lists of significant health conditions, student exemptions, and students receiving medication.
  • Administers first aid and student medications when school nurse is not available and does so consistent with doctor and parental direction and school policies.
  • May provide colostomy care including emptying colostomy bags and cleaning of the skin.
  • May provide catheterization.
  • May administer tube feedings and/or medication(s) as authorized by the school nurse and supervisory staff.
  • May provide health services and assistance to include changing dressings, assisting with oxygen, assisting with insulin, assisting with nebulizers or inhalers, and assisting with walkers, wheelchairs, canes, crutches.
  • Maintain and update centralized records and materials.
  • Order centralized supplies and forms.
  • Complete required statistical reports.
  • Maintain and monitor supplies for classroom diabetes kits and field trip first aid kits.
  • Administer specialized physical health care services under the supervision of the school nurse when site level staff is unavailable, using standard procedures.
  • Adhere to requirements for confidentiality regarding students’ records; discreetly handle sensitive information pertaining to staff, parents and students.
  • Operate a computer to input, retrieve, and file data and text.
  • Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
