About The Position

The New York City Board of Correction (BOC) is a nine-person, non-judicial oversight board responsible for regulating, monitoring, and inspecting the correctional facilities of New York City. Established in 1957, its role expanded in 1977 to become more independent. The Board's five mandated functions include establishing minimum standards for care and custody, investigating serious incidents, reviewing grievances, evaluating the Department of Correction (DOC), and making recommendations on correctional planning. BOC works with DOC, Correctional Health Services (CHS), and other partners, emphasizing public reporting and data-driven decision-making. The Board's Executive Director (ED) oversees a 33-person staff and a $4 million annual operating budget, developing and implementing strategies to support safer, fairer, smaller, and more humane NYC jails. The ED coordinates monthly public board meetings and oversees legal, policy, regulatory affairs, compliance, monitoring, research, risk management, board governance, human resources, and IT matters, while ensuring a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. The General Counsel/Deputy Executive Director (GC/DED) manages the legal team and functions related to regulatory, policy, appeals, and special investigations, providing strategic advisory support to the ED on contractual and agency matters, managing relationships with the NYC Law Department and pro bono counsel, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and city law. This internship is a 10-week program, beginning on June 1, 2026, and ending on August 7, 2026, with the intern working a 35-hour week.
