About The Position

The Summer Tutor plays a critical role in the Youth Rise program by delivering individualized academic support to high school-aged youth involved in the child welfare system. This position is responsible for helping youth rebuild academic confidence, strengthen core skills, and connect learning to future goals. Aligned with Youth Rise's four core pillars-Academic Support, Career Development, Leadership Development, and Life Skills, the tutor will provide engaging, creative, and trauma-informed instruction that supports each youth's individualized learning and growth plan.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field (required).
  • Experience working with high school-aged youth.
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed educational practices.
  • Ability to interpret and implement individualized learning plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative (self-starter).
  • Creative, flexible instructional approach.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Candidates are required to complete a criminal background check through the State of South Carolina and Federal Bureau of Investigation; and
  • Pass scheduled and/or random drug tests.

Responsibilities

  • Review student records, assessments, and individualized learning plans.
  • Conduct or support academic skill assessments (reading, writing, math).
  • Develop differentiated lesson plans aligned with program themes and weekly goals.
  • Collaborate with program staff to integrate academic support into the daily
  • Prepare materials that connect academic content to career exploration, leadership, and life skills.
  • Deliver daily academic instruction aligned with needs and goals of youth (literacy, math, structured learning time).
  • Reinforce academic skills through real-world application (career tasks, projects, presentations).
  • Support youth in completing academic projects tied to program themes (wellness, leadership, community engagement).
  • Monitor progress and adjust instruction to ensure growth and engagement.
  • Collaborate with staff to support interdisciplinary learning across all program pillars.
  • Contribute to end-of-program assessments, student presentations, and showcase activities.
  • Deliver high-quality, engaging academic instruction for high school youth.
  • Create a safe, supportive, trauma-informed learning environment.
  • Design creative, hands-on learning experiences that build confidence and relevance.
  • Support development and implementation of individualized learning plans.
  • Track and document academic progress and participation.
  • Encourage student ownership, motivation, and goal setting.
  • Build strong, positive relationships that support youth development.
