About The Position

This position is responsible for the construction, inspection, maintenance, and operation of substations, substation equipment and relays, and distribution apparatus such as reclosers, regulators, capacitors, primary and secondary commercial/industrial metering, and other associated devices and equipment

Requirements

  • A two-year degree in engineering, computer technology or other related field of study; or High School graduate or G.E.D Certificate may be considered, when accompanied by three or more years of applicable and related experience.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of all applicable safety rules, regulations, practices, and proper use of PPE.
  • Previous training in substation equipment operation and repair is desired.
  • Must have a working knowledge of power systems, construction, operations and maintenance, specifications, and standards.
  • Must possess a basic understanding of basic electricity and be able to learn and comprehend substation drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Must be able to be attain a working knowledge of all substation equipment.
  • Must have working knowledge of applicable codes, regulations and standards, both national and local.
  • Must be able to learn and utilize Windows, Microsoft Office, and specialty Cooperative software/application platforms, computers and iPad, for reports, workflow, job tracking, inspection process, and appraisals.
  • Must be able to utilize electronic hand-held devices and personal computers.
  • Must have the ability to work without direct supervision, as circumstances require.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a class “A” commercial driver’s license or be able to obtain the license within 6 months.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 lbs. Must be able to climb (ascending and descending), using the feet and legs and/or hands and arms; must have sense of balance; must be able to stoop; kneel; crouch’ and crawl. Must be able to reach; handle; work primarily with fingers; and feel. Must be able to talk and hear. Must be able to obtain impressions through the eyes of the shape, size, distance, motion, and color or other characteristics of objects. Must possess acuity, far and near, depth perception, field of vision, accommodation, and color vision. Must be able to speak clearly and communicate effectively in order to interact with company employees and members

Responsibilities

  • Operates equipment, climbs and works on substation structures and transformers.
  • Performs and/or observes planned or restoration switching in substations, as required.
  • Using safe work practices and appropriate PPE, performs and observes work on energized equipment, up to 25kV and in proximity of transmission level voltages.
  • Using applicable inspection platform, position is responsible for performing accurate normal, special, and emergency inspections of both substation and specific distribution apparatus and provides nameplate and data updates and information to ensure platform database is up to date.
  • Utilizes the inspection platform database to create planned maintenances, schedule third-party equipment testing, and perform repairs or schedule contractor services.
  • Performs commercial and industrial metering apparatus wiring and installation on all secondary voltages and primary voltages up to 25kV.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs capacitor bank racks and controls/control wiring.
  • Assists with and installs power quality meters at residential, commercial, and industrial locations.
  • Works in safety lookout role, and ensures his position is backfilled, when consultants, contractors, and non-qualified personnel work within the substation yard.
  • Helps coordinate contractor access for quotes and work schedules for substation property repairs to grounds/washing, fences and gates, driveways and culverts.
  • Must be available for substation restoration, emergencies, storms, and act as Supervisor on Call when scheduled.
  • Participate in developmental classes and certifications when asked.
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.
