The Substation Specialist installs, maintains, calibrates, modifies, overhauls, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of mechanical, and electro-mechanical equipment and systems. These functions are performed on distribution equipment such as power transformers, metalclad switchgear, overhead bus, SCADA, Fiber Optic Systems, and other related equipment. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Operates equipment and performs manufacturer’s preventative maintenance on substation power transformers, such as IFT testing, and oil testing and interpretation of results. In addition, check fittings, gauges, fans and connections for looseness, leaks or damage; maintain the load tap changers, and assist with rebuilds or maintenance as required. Inspect switches, breakers, bushings, and bus work for proper adjustment, contamination, chips, cracks, or other damage. Performs manufacturer’s preventative maintenance on 15/25KV switchgear breakers and pad mounted switches and interrupters. Performs monthly inspections of substation equipment in hardcopy and/or computer database formats. Maintains substation and UPS batteries, consisting of resistance testing, cell voltage testing, specific gravity testing, cleaning and replacing parts. Performs T&D switching duties for both substation 138 kv system and 15/25 kv Distribution System. Maintains and troubleshoots the fiber and radio communication system for the electric system operation from the substation level to the SCADA master and the component level. Performs infrared testing for all substation equipment, major distribution equipment, and performs corrective action as required. Responds to transmission and distribution system outages. Works with I&C Technician on relays, fiber and testing; works with SCADA Technician on relay and control system and associated wiring. Consults with and advises the Substation T&D manager on matters related to the maintenance or upgrading of the metering system, protective relays, mobile equipment, substation equipment, tools, computer and communications systems. Performs other duties as assigned.
