About The Position

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Office of International Nuclear Safeguards (NA-241), is seeking a highly qualified Subject Matter Expert to support the Advanced Reactor International Safeguards Engagement (ARISE) Program. ARISE focuses on promoting the integration of international safeguards by design into advanced nuclear reactors (including small modular reactors) and associated fuel cycle facilities, ensuring effective IAEA safeguards implementation while supporting U.S. nonproliferation objectives. This role involves providing expert technical support on advanced nuclear reactor technologies, safeguards, and related programmatic efforts. The successful candidate will contribute to technical reviews, stakeholder engagement, program planning, and high-impact initiatives within a dynamic national security environment.

Requirements

  • Active Q-level DOE security clearance (equivalent to Top Secret).
  • U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in nuclear engineering or a relevant discipline.
  • At least 5 years of research and development (R&D) or operational experience in nuclear technology-related fields or industries.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as a Subject Matter Expert for the ARISE program on advanced nuclear reactor technologies and associated fuel cycle facilities.
  • Performing technical reviews of ARISE deliverables from national laboratories.
  • Demonstrating understanding of international safeguards obligations and their implementation worldwide.
  • Providing objective technical reviews and assistance with the NA-241 ARISE project proposal process, program deliverables, reports, and presentations.
  • Developing briefings and related materials for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Offering technical assistance in developing program plans and internal technical roadmaps.
  • Communicating with internal NNSA stakeholders and external partners (e.g., U.S. advanced/SMR industry, IAEA, DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, NRC) to foster collaborative relationships and share programmatic efforts.
  • Leading ARISE HQ-directed efforts, such as the Technology Readiness and Challenges Study (TRACS).
  • Representing ARISE interests and participating in relevant technical consultancies, conferences, and meetings as appropriate.
  • Performing additional administrative and support tasks as directed, including preparing presentation materials, compiling research, supporting special projects, or assisting with travel arrangements.
