Job Description The Associated Students of the University of Nevada is made up of every undergraduate student at the University of Nevada. ASUN provides a means for students to voice concerns and address issues at the university, local, state, national, and international levels.

  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least 7 undergraduate credits
  • Perform all duties and instructions outlined by the ASUN Governing Documents
  • Uphold the Nevada Student Code of Conduct
  • Meet all deadlines set forth
  • Attend all required meetings and training
  • Work scheduled hours
  • Properly complete and submit HR paperwork on time
  • Assist in the promotion of the mission of ASUN and Nevada
  • Behave in a manner that is ethical, maintaining a high level of integrity
  • Other duties as called upon by my position
  • I understand if I do not adhere to the items outlined in this agreement or what is stated in the ASUN Governing Documents, my position may be subject to disciplinary action by the ASUN Judicial Council and/or the University of Nevada.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fields such as pre-law studies, political science, philosophy, criminal justice or related social sciences fields through course of study, previous work experience, or extracurricular activities
  • Existing and in-depth knowledge of the functions and policies of the Associated Students, including familiarity with governing documents, parliamentary procedure, and Nevada Open Meeting Law
  • Motivation to further the goals and initiatives under the Impact Nevada platform through: Promoting fiscal transparency and open governance through holding ASUN appointed and elected officers accountable and educating officers on the Statutes of the Associated Students Expanding knowledge of participation in ASUN public meetings and ASUN accountability processes to the general student body
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to draft opinions, present cases, and provide guidance to students through analysis
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues, interpret laws and regulations, and think critically in an objective manner to identify legal implications and make sound decisions
  • Demonstrate integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct to uphold the integrity of the Association through promoting fairness, impartiality, and respect for diversity within the student body
  • Willingness to mentor an intern during the fall and spring semesters

Responsibilities

  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall issue advisory opinions concerning the law, legislation, or any other act of the Association
  • To update and distribute the Constitution for the purpose of engrossing any Constitutional Amendments as passed by the Association and approved by the Board of Regents.
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance is designated the responsibility to publish current editions of the Associated Student’s Constitution
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall act as President if, by reason of death, resignation, removal from office, inability, or failure to qualify, there is no President, Vice President, Speaker of the Senate, Director of Clubs and Organizations, or Director of Programming to act as President
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall investigate alleged violations of the Election Code and prosecute offenders before the Judicial Council
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall prosecute any case, at the ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance’s or Judicial Council’s discretion, filed by a third party,even in cases where the plaintiff seeks to dismiss the charge
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall act as the representative of the Director of Elections and Democratic Education before the ASUN Judicial Council
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall ensure that all regulations concerning petitions are followed fully
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall deliver and provide for all petitions (for each election) or for initiative and referendums to the President of the Associated Students and the Director of Elections and Democratic before the Candidates’ Meeting
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall assist any student interested in writing a petition for initiative and referendum
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall certify that a petition question is an impartial and accurate description of the proposal and shall assign the petition an Official Name and Number, if the petition creates a law, prepare an Official Summary of the petition, to confer with the office of Legal Counsel or designee for approval of language on questions of student fees, and to create the petition and return to the Primary Proponent three (3) copies of the petition
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall verify that there are a sufficient number of valid signatures on each petition, by checking the student status of each person who signed the petition, to immediately notify the Primary Proponent(s) if the verifying official discovers that the petition submitted lacks sufficient valid signatures, and to preserve the petition for the same time period as the Director of Elections and Democratic Education preserves the ballots for the election for which the petition qualified or attempted to qualify for placement on the ballot
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall notify Candidates and all others cited of charges during elections
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance supervise ballot tabulation
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall release the election results as soon as possible
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall attend or send a representative to all physical polling locations and places where ballots are kept and tabulated, provided such representative is not a candidate or agent in the election
  • To carry out such other functions and duties as required under the constitution and laws
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall not prosecute any case to which the ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance is a party or in which the ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance has an interest in the outcome as described in subsection 3, Title III, Chapter 302, Rule 3a. When such a conflict occurs, the Chair of Government Operations shall act as a special prosecutor to act as and perform the elections duties of the ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance insofar as the ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance’s conflict is concerned
  • To have a report read or spoken into record at minimum every other Senate meeting
  • Responsible to attend all ASUN retreats, and trainings as decided by the President and the Director of Executive Outreach
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance shall serve as ex-officio member on the Senate Committee on Government Operations
  • Organize trainings and continue to provide education on Nevada Open Meeting Law for the Association
  • Ensure Nevada Open Meeting Law is followed and work with Officers to correct any violations.
  • To cancel meetings that have violated Nevada Open Meeting Law
  • In the cancellation notice, the ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance must list what violation(s) occurred
  • The ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance must send a meeting cancellation notice no later than twenty-four hours before the meeting is to take place
  • The cancellation notice must be sent to the presiding officer and Secretary of the Senate.
  • To invalidate meetings that have been conducted and violated Nevada Open Meeting Law
  • In the invalidation notice, the ASUN Director of Ethics and Compliance must list the violation(s) that occurred
  • The invalidation notice must be sent to the presiding officer and the Secretary of the Senate
  • Ensure that Executive Department Heads are hosting regular meetings in accordance with Nevada Open Meeting Law at least once per month.
