About The Position

The University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) is a public liberal arts and sciences university on the Island of Hawaii, known for its unique blend of cultural immersion and research opportunities, leveraging the island's extraordinary geological, biological, and cultural diversity. It is a comprehensive, regional university within the ten-campus University of Hawaii System, focusing primarily on high-quality baccalaureate and select postgraduate education, including distinctive programs in areas like marine science, geology, astronomy, and Hawaiian language revitalization. The Disability Services Coordinator ensures that student applicants and enrolled students with disabilities are able to access University of Hawai'i at Hilo's programs and services as required under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The Disability Services Coordinator will assess student applicants and enrolled student requests for disability accommodations and determine reasonable accommodations for eligible applicants and enrolled students with the goal of student success. As a part of the Office of Equal Opportunity, the Disability Services Coordinator works to provide an accessible and discrimination-free campus environment. This position will engage with student applicants, enrolled students, faculty and staff, engaging in an interactive process when determining reasonable accommodations and will provide education to the campus community on services offered by the Disability Services office, the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the University of Hawai'i at Hilo's compliance obligations.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in social sciences, education, special education or related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing disability access services to students with disabilities in higher education, including direct counseling experience; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of disability access services to students with disabilities in higher education as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with providing disability access services to students with disabilities in higher education.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with providing disability accommodations in employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of principles of methods, materials, procedures and techniques used in university disability access services.
  • Considerable knowledge of mental and physical disabilities, their impact on human development and education, particularly in higher education.
  • Ability to review and interpret documentation to determine student disability status and appropriate accommodations/academic adjustments.
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable federal and state non-discrimination law and their implementation in higher education settings for students with disabilities.
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable federal and state non-discrimination law of disability accommodations in employment.
  • Ability to review and interpret documentation to determine whether an employee has a qualified disability and to determine a reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work respectfully, tactfully and effectively with applicants, students and employees who have a wide range of mental and physical disabilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the ADA Coordinator for students at the University of Hawaii at Hilo; providing disability access services to student applicants and enrolled students with physical and/or mental disabilities to promote their development, growth and equal access in higher education.
  • Determine eligibility of students for disability access services. Conduct assessments of the nature and extent of their disabilities.
  • Receive and review disability documentation. Engage in an interactive process with students to determine their strengths, functional limitations of their disabilities, and determine justified need for specific disability access services.
  • Describe and discuss appropriate disability access services, and applicable University policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain effective relationships with students with disabilities, and provide direct disability access counseling, as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance to faculty and staff regarding inclusion of students with disabilities throughout the UH Hilo experience.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with appropriate campus and community partners and agencies to effectively and efficiently coordinate and implement disability access services to qualified students and employees.
  • Assess employee requests for disability accommodations. Engage in an interactive process with employees with qualifying disabilities to determine a reasonable accommodation.
  • Timely create and maintain an organized and confidential records management system.
  • Assist in developing and updating campus policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure access for students and employees with disabilities.
  • Serve as the campus¿ subject matter expert and resource on ADA and disability-related issues.
  • Keeps abreast of current ADA and disability-related compliance obligations, best practices and emerging trends in the field and advised the Director on needed changes in programming, policies, procedures or resources.
  • Oversees the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and day-to-day work of student assistants, including scheduling student work hours and monitoring and processing payroll related documents.
  • Collect, organize, maintain and provide data on the number of students, employees and members of the public, who request ADA accommodations, who receive ADA accommodations, what types of accommodations are determined to be reasonable, and the costs of reasonable accommodations.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to Federal and State agencies, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
