About The Position

Our nurse externship program consists of 7 week paid work experience with a registered nurse preceptor. Nursing students must be entering their senior year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program or the third semester of a diploma or associate degree program to apply. The Nurse Assistant/Extern will work under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Requires the knowledge, technique, and communication skills to therapeutically meet the needs of assigned patients. Responsible for performing a variety of assigned tasks that may include activities of daily living by assisting with serving meals, feeding patients as necessary, and providing fresh water and nourishment between meals. The Nurse Assistant/Extern may also assist patients with personal hygiene and will provide personal hygiene to patients who are unable to assist themselves. Nurse Assistant/Extern will also assist in ambulating, turning, and positioning patients as well as assist in transporting patients, answering call lights, and reporting observations to the patient’s nurse. The Nurse Assistant/Extern will document as appropriate. Must follow the policies and procedures of the organization. Those in this role must also protect patient information. Must be able to identify each patient’s age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Registered Nurse Program approved by a State Board of Nursing.
  • BSN Program. A student must be entering their senior year and have completed at least the medical/surgical clinical component of his/her educational experience.
  • Diploma Program - A student who has completed their second year of nursing school.
  • Associate Program – A student who has completed their first year of school as who is considered a senior.
  • Has to have a minimum GPA of 3.0
