About The Position

The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is a unique department that supports the missions of both the Division of Student Affairs and the Division of Academic Affairs. Its core responsibility is to enact Illinois State’s commitment to civic engagement and cultivate a culture that values and rewards it. This is achieved through various programs and services involving students, faculty, and staff, in partnership with Bloomington-Normal community organizations. CCE's work is structured around volunteering and service-learning, political engagement, and civic education. Students serving as Student Leaders in Community Engagement (SLiCE) will assist CCE by planning and executing various projects and programs, specifically leading in volunteering/service learning and civic education. The position emphasizes student learning and personal growth to achieve programmatic outcomes. SLiCE students will undergo a rigorous orientation and participate in weekly training to enhance leadership and professional skills, including communication, cultural competency, professionalism, event planning, peer education, collaboration, and leadership. They will learn to articulate and utilize their strengths for program planning success. Required reflection logs will help students process their learning. SLiCE staff are expected to represent CCE professionally, communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and uphold CCE’s principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Students in leadership positions within Alternative Breaks (executive board, trip leaders, etc.) are not eligible to apply.
  • Current enrollment at ISU.
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.7 or higher.
  • Attendance at all mandatory training sessions.
  • Commitment to supporting 2-3 programs per semester.
  • Commitment to 1-4 hours of program planning and participation per week (varies depending on the time of year).
  • Completion of weekly reflection logs.
  • Weekly group meetings with GA Supervisor and peers.
  • One-on-one meetings with GA Supervisor at least once a month.

Responsibilities

  • Attend an all-day (or 6-hour equivalent) orientation training session where students will learn about the Center for Civic Engagement, civic engagement and being a civically engaged community member, community service, social justice, leadership, and complete 12-passenger van training.
  • With the guidance of the GA for Community Service Projects, students will oversee programmatic duties of the September Service Saturdays, Holiday Helper, MLK Day of Service, Spring Into Service, Bring It Back to Normal service projects, and other civic education programs including planning activities; facilitating discussions; distributing marketing materials; recruiting and managing participants; and other program logistics.
  • Maintain weekly reflection logs in which students consider the impact and quality of their work and brainstorm ways to improve the process.
  • Attend one-on-one meetings with GA Supervisor as scheduled (at least once a month).
  • Attend weekly meetings during which they will spend time on professional development activities and presentations on topics such as defining the words we use in this area of work, social change and leadership development models, event planning, professionalism, assessment, peer education, and recruitment among others as well as planning for upcoming projects.
