Under immediate supervision (Maintenance Worker I) or general supervision (Maintenance Worker II), this role involves performing skilled or semi-skilled work and tasks in the maintenance and operation of streets, parks, storm water, buildings, grounds, and other City structures and facilities. The position requires operating and maintaining a wide variety of maintenance tools and equipment. This is a broad classification with individual positions assigned to specific functional areas, and duties and assignments may overlap depending on departmental operational needs and staffing levels. Incumbents may be required to respond to emergency call outs. The Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level position, receiving on-the-job training, specific day-to-day direction, and close supervision. Individuals at this level are not expected to possess the same level of knowledge or skills as a Maintenance Worker II and exercise less independent discretion. Advancement to the 'II' level is contingent upon meeting minimum qualifications and demonstrating satisfactory job performance. The Maintenance Worker II is a journey-level position, performing the full range of assigned duties, including the operation and maintenance of various public works tools and heavy equipment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance for new or unusual situations and are fully conversant with the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
