About The Position

The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial operations of the organization. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, maintains general ledger integrity, and supports compliance with FPHNYC’s accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory guidelines. The Staff Accountant plays a key role in monthly closings, audits, and financial reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 2–4 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and nonprofit/fund accounting principles
  • Experience with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar platforms)
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and accuracy
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness
  • Prepare and post journal entries in support of monthly and annual close processes
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, including invoice processing, billing, and collections
  • Perform bank and credit card reconciliations and investigate discrepancies as needed
  • Assist with payroll processing and related account reconciliations
  • Contribute to the preparation of financial statements and internal management reports
  • Track, reconcile, and report on grant funding in compliance with donor and grantor requirements
  • Support the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting activities
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation; coordinate with external auditors during audits
  • Monitor expenses and ensure proper coding in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards
  • Support internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and organizational policies
  • Maintain organized and accurate financial records and supporting documentation
  • Other organizational duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Controller and CFO
