About The Position

Chestnut Carbon is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Staff Accountant to support our growing finance and accounting operations. This is a high-impact role that will play a key part in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records as we scale our nature-based carbon removal initiatives. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for general ledger maintenance, transaction processing, reconciliations, and reporting. This is an exciting opportunity for a finance professional who thrives in a mission-driven, fast-paced environment. Chestnut was founded and backed by Kimmeridge, a US-based private equity firm with offices in New York and Denver.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • 2+ years of relevant accounting experience (public or private)
  • Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP
  • Experience with ERP systems, NetSuite experience is a plus
  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency with MS office software
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a start-up or high-growth environment is a plus
  • Familiarity with carbon markets or environmental sciences is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Reconcile bank statements and general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and record journal entries including accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, intercompany transactions.
  • Assist in the monthly, quarterly, and end-year close process.
  • Process accounts payable invoices, expenses, and credit card charges in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist with invoicing, processing and reconciling deposits, receipts and disbursements.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and internal management reports.
  • Support annual audits and tax filings by preparing requested schedules and documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounting records, files, and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
  • Work closely with other departments on special projects or routine tasks to ensure accurate financial tracking and reporting.
