About The Position

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is recruiting top talent to join their Underwriting Compliance Auditor organization. These remote-first teams play a critical role in supporting the well-being of 3.4 million customers. The Sr. Underwriting Compliance Auditor supports the underwriting audit function by reviewing underwriting files and group tax documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements and internal policies. This role is ideal for individuals who are highly detail-oriented and interested in building a career in underwriting, compliance or audit operations. This is a remote role with occasional travel to BCBST headquarters in Chattanooga, TN. Sponsorship is not available for this role. BCBST is a remote-first organization with many employees working primarily from their homes. Each position within the company is classified as either fully remote, partially remote, or office based. BCBST hires employees for remote positions from across the U.S. with the exception of California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and New York. Applicants living in these states may move to an approved state prior to starting a position with BCBST at their own expense. If the position requires the individual to reside in Chattanooga, TN, they may be eligible for relocation assistance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years – Experience in underwriting, underwriting audit, compliance, quality review, and/or basic business employee tax filing requirements/accounting/payroll experience
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to interpret and apply underwriting guidelines and policies
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple audits/deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Teams
  • Organized, and capable of managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal abilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Conduct audits of underwriting files, including applications, tax documentation, financial statements, and supporting records
  • Review tax forms (e.g., wage reports, payroll records, business tax filings) to validate group eligibility, enrollment, or rating criteria
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal guidelines, regulatory standards, and compliance policies
  • Identify discrepancies, documentation gaps, errors, or policy exceptions in underwriting determinations
  • Communicate audit results to Marketing, Underwriting, compliance, and leadership teams, including recommended corrective actions
  • Document audit findings clearly and maintain complete audit workpapers
  • Support follow‑up audits, corrective action plans, and appeals or reconsiderations
  • Maintain knowledge of underwriting rules, tax documentation requirements, and regulatory changes (i.e. ACA, ERISA, TN state law, IRS rules)
  • Track audit trends and recommend process improvements or training opportunities
  • Mentor and assist Underwriting Auditors with complex and sensitive audits as well as assist with quality audits of other auditors using quality-related metrics
