Our Research Automation and Engineering team is looking for a proactive business partner-centric Sr. R&D Automation Software Engineer to join the team located in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. The team is dedicated to the successful conception, design, development, integration, and support of novel machines and instruments, scientific laboratory automation, and other enabling technologies. The qualified candidate will be responsible for implementing robust software and data acquisition solutions for R&D automation projects, emphasizing system integration and data integrity. This role requires hands-on experience with hardware integration, SCADA/IIoT platforms, and database management (SQL) to deliver cohesive solutions. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proven experience implementing hardware/software solutions for industrial automation or a similar context.
  • Mandatory background in creating custom hardware/software solutions for interacting with scientific, industrial, or related equipment.
  • Extensive experience with SCADA/IIoT platforms; basic knowledge of the Inductive Automation Ignition platform is mandatory.
  • Strong understanding of SQL database interaction, data acquisition, and system integration methodologies.
  • Required proficiency in core development languages relevant to automation and integration (e.g., Python, C#).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong proficiency in specific front-end/back-end development languages and frameworks (e.g.,JavaScript, React, Angular, etc.).
  • Expertise in various database management systems (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and industrial protocols (e.g., OPC-UA).
  • Familiarity with laboratory automation concepts or specific agricultural equipment is desired but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and deploy software solutions for R&D automation projects, focusing on system connectivity and data flow.
  • Provide support for existing and future SCADA/IIoT systems, with mandatory hands-on development experience with the Inductive Automation Ignition platform (including Vision and Perspective modules, scripting, and SQL integration).
  • Engineer and manage scalable SQL database schemas that meet diverse departmental data modeling and complexity requirements.
  • Integrate internally developed and third-party software applications using APIs and managing direct database interactions.
  • Implement data acquisition pipelines through custom software interfaces connecting research testing instrumentation to centralized data repositories.
