The Senior Chemist conducts research, product development, and production maintenance projects for the Product Development Lab at Dunn-Edwards. They work closely with other members of the technical team to design experiments, develop paint and coating formulations, and test them according to standard protocols. Data collection and reporting skills are critical components to the role, and experiments are conducted in an accurate, complete, and efficient manner. Other fundamental competencies include effective communication ability, organizational skills, teamwork, and observational skills. All work shall be performed with adherence to Dunn-Edwards’ environmental, health, and safety (EHS) policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. or B. A.) from a four-year college or university; and at least five years’ related coatings experience; or equivalent combination of education/training and experience.
  • Candidates with a master's degree (MS) or doctorate (PhD) need at least three years of experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively prepare and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, industry professionals, and the general public.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as statistical analysis, designs of experiments (DOE), exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Must have a minimum of five years of extensive coatings laboratory experience.
  • A broad in-depth knowledge of paint raw materials, processing equipment, paint market needs.
  • Moderate interaction with other departments, including Manufacturing, Quality Control, Regulatory, and/or Marketing to address specific needs is required.
  • HMIS Training (i.e., Hazard Communication: 29 CFR 1910.1200 and GISO 5194).
  • Personal Protective Equipment (i.e., Level A through D: GISO 3382, 3384 and 3385).
  • Emergency Response & Evacuation (i.e., 29 CFR 1910.120 and GISO 5192

Responsibilities

  • The Senior Chemist will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the practices, concepts, and procedures as it relates to the design, making, and performance testing of paint coatings and formulations.
  • They are expected to operate independently with mentorship and guidance from experienced members of the technical team to understand and execute project assignments in a timely manner.
  • The Senior Chemist will formulate new, market-leading products based on critical to quality (CTQ) metrics and optimize existing products to meet performance and regulatory requirements.
  • Production maintenance of current products for raw material qualifications and manufacturing efficiency is also a part of this role.
  • Developing a thorough knowledge of coating raw materials, formulation science, and experimental design
  • Building a strong understanding of Dunn-Edwards’ products and capabilities, the competitive landscape, and market trends and needs.
  • Maintain excellent working records, communicating experimental results to the technical team, and preparing and delivering project presentations for key stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and contributing ideas to other project work.
  • Independently operating and interpreting results from coating-related analytical equipment, such as the rheometer, FTIR, and particle size analyzer.
  • Review opportunities for process and product improvement with the Group leader.
  • Occasionally mentoring, training, and directing the work of Technicians and Associate Chemists will be necessary.
  • Performing routine or non-routine tasks as assigned.
  • Create and maintain an orderly and professional workplace with adherence to good housekeeping practices in both individual and shared areas.
  • Participate in safety inspections and conduct all work in a manner consistent with best safety practices.
