About The Position

UFG is currently hiring for a Sr. Accountant to be responsible for the accurate accounting, reporting, and analysis of United Fire Group’s (UFG) financial transactions. This role ensures that all transactions are properly recorded in accordance with GAAP and statutory accounting principles while maintaining data integrity across subledger and financial reporting systems. Working closely with Finance leadership, the Senior Accountant provides technical support for the month-end and quarter-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting across multiple company entities. This individual also assists in implementing process improvements, strengthening internal controls, and supporting both external and internal audit requests. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical accounting skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex insurance environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 5 years of financial reporting or insurance accounting experience
  • Experience with month-end/quarter-end close processes in a corporate environment required
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and statutory accounting principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy and detail
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, complex formulas)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teams
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Process improvement mindset with ability to identify and implement efficiency enhancements
  • Critical thinking skills and sound professional judgment

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or progress toward certification preferred
  • Master's degree in Accounting or MBA preferred
  • Prior experience within property and casualty insurance, preferred
  • Experience with financial systems and subledgers desirable

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee month-end and quarter-end close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis for multiple company entities
  • Analyze financial information and prepare detailed reports to support management decision-making
  • Identify and resolve accounting issues proactively
  • Research complex accounting issues to ensure compliance with GAAP and/or statutory accounting principles
  • Prepare and review financial statements and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Maintain current knowledge of accounting standards, insurance industry regulations, and best practices
  • Maintain SOX-compliant documentation, ensuring adherence to company policies and internal control requirements
  • Assist with audit requests, including internal controls and testing evidence
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing processes, standardizing reporting, and automating data flow
  • Mentor other team members by sharing knowledge and modeling best practices in accounting and financial reporting
  • Support system enhancements and testing related to accounting or financial reporting applications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations and IT to support finance transformation initiatives designed to modernize systems and standardize financial processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the finance department and company goals
