About The Position

We are seeking a Senior Accountant with a focus on financial reporting to join our Controllership team at Aspida. The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and compliant financial reporting in accordance with regulatory requirements that are specific to the insurance industry. This role requires a deep understanding of insurance accounting principles, statutory regulations, and reporting standards but you do not have to have industry experience to date – We can provide all necessary training. The Senior Accountant will also have involvement in preparing and reviewing financial reports, coordinating with internal and external auditors, and maintaining effective controls to safeguard the integrity of financial reporting. This role reports to the Director, Assistant Controller and is required to be onsite 3 days a week at our Durham, NC office.

Requirements

  • BA / BS in business, accounting, finance, or related degree
  • Proficiency in critical software, including advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Ability to work well as an individual and also collaboratively with other team members - Listening to and valuing others' opinions
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting

Nice To Haves

  • MBA / CPA / CFA
  • 3-4 years of relevant accounting and reporting experience, preferably in insurance or financial services
  • Knowledge of insurance accounting principles and regulatory requirements (e.g., NAIC Annual Statement)

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file financial statements for the Company, ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., GAAP, NAIC, state insurance departments).
  • Reconcile financial statements with internal financial reports.
  • Prepare journal entries and detailed reconciliations of balance sheet accounts ensuring sufficient, accurate support is provided.
  • Stay abreast of changes in insurance accounting standards and regulatory guidelines, implementing necessary updates to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with external auditors during year-end audits and regulatory examinations, addressing audit findings and ensuring timely completion of audit requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal auditors as required throughout the year.
  • Assist with the preparation and filing of statutory insurance filings, including annual statements, risk-based capital reports, and other regulatory submissions.
  • Maintain internal control procedures to ensure the integrity of financial reporting.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement in financial reporting processes.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance to cross-functional teams and support business initiatives with comprehensive financial analysis.
