About The Position

Under general supervision, is a working lead with supervisory authority and ability on different types of sports fields that routinely is responsible for the performance of semiskilled, manual, and limited skilled workers in the care, maintenance, and repair different types of sports fields by performing the following duties. Safety-Sensitive Position: Yes (as defined under Oklahoma Statute Title 63 § 427.8) All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Maintain grounds of turf and grass sports fields in an acceptable playing condition. Operate tractors, and specialized equipment using specific attachments, to till, cultivate, and grade new turf areas, to apply prescribed amounts of chemical, fertilizer, insecticide, rubber fill and fungicide, and to mow different types of sport fields at designated heights of cut, drag and fill turf areas to the appropriate level, exercising care not to injure turf or shrubs. Must be able to teach the operation of equipment to other employees. Accomplish a high quality finished product while supervising project crews. Cut grass and groom turf on football fields, baseball fields, soccer fields and other designated sports fields using hand mowers, power mowers and other designated turf equipment. Perform repairs, patches, filling, and corrective maintenance on artificial turf fields to ensure safety, playability, and proper field conditions. Connect hoses and sprinkler systems at designated points on sports fields to irrigate grass and clean turf. Repair irrigation leaks, heads, and other operational controls associated with the sports complex. Dig and rake baseball mounds, grade infields, clean sports fields, and repairs roadbeds, using shovels, rakes, spades, and other hand tools. May plant, trim, and spray trees and shrubs. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Skilled in operating tractors with attachments and other light automotive equipment; in operating various types of power equipment and hand tools; in supervising others; in recordkeeping; in diagnosing and repairing equipment; and in installation and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of commonly accepted practices, methods, tools and materials used on grass and artificial turf sports fields; of the hazards and safety precautions of the work; of supervisory principles and practices; and of general park maintenance standards and techniques.
  • Ability to repair patch, fill, or correct any damages associated with artificial turf fields; understand and follow oral and written directions; to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time; to use hand and power tools and equipment; to develop skill in assigned operations; to teach all required maintenance practices on grass and artificial turf sports fields; to operate tractors and other light automotive equipment proficiently; ability to teach operation of equipment to others; to control the work of others; to interact with supervisors, subordinates and the public in a positive and professional manner; and to read and understand chemical labels.
  • Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school or possess a general education degree (GED), plus 12 credit hours from an accredited college or trade school in turf management, horticulture or a related field of study; and over three years of satisfactory full-time paid employment in a golf course maintenance position with demonstrated supervisory skills, or any equivalent combination of education or experience; substituting one year of satisfactory full-time paid employment for 6 hours of required college or trade school hours, with a maximum substitution of 12 hours.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effective present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License possessed for at least 6 months
  • Defensive driving with Tulsa County within 6 months of hire
  • Certified Chemical Applicators Permit (Category III)
