About The Position

The Speech Pathologist operates at a novice to advanced beginner level, particularly within a hospital-based setting. This role involves performing assessments and therapeutic interventions for the routine patient population. The individual is expected to contribute to team efforts by undertaking department and team tasks, engaging in problem-solving, and applying intervention skills. After successfully completing their Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) and with Department Manager approval, the Speech Pathologist may orient other allied health professionals to their field. Additionally, with approval from the Coordinator of Student Supervision, they may provide student experiences.

Requirements

  • License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or Clinical Fellowship Year candidate
  • Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP (for continued employment)
  • Current CCC in SLP (for continued employment)
  • Completion of CFY and awarded a CCC, at conclusion of 1st year of employment (for CFY incumbents)
  • CPR certification
  • New graduate/CFY’s to SLP’s with less than two (2) years of experience
  • Strong Clinical Fellowship Year candidates will be considered
  • Previous clinical experience with evaluation/treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders
  • Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments
  • Previous experience planning and executing treatment
  • Master's Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology
  • Competes required learning exchange courses

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders
  • Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders
  • Previous work experience in a critical care setting
  • Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems
  • Clinical rotations during graduate training in medical setting

Responsibilities

  • Perform assessments and therapeutic interventions with the routine patient population
  • Support team endeavors by performing department and/or team tasks, problem solving and intervention skills
  • Orient other allied health professionals to their field (upon successful completion of CFY and approval of Department Manager)
  • Provide student experiences (per approval of the Coordinator of Student Supervision)
  • Schedule frequency and intensity of therapy for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Select assessment instruments and administer assessment
  • Interpret assessment results
  • Complete documentation
  • Plan and carry out treatment strategies
  • Develop long- and short-term goals
  • Perform patient/family/staff education
  • Report at patient/family/team conferences
  • Terminate therapy when appropriate
  • Provide student supervision (if deemed competent and has CCC by Department Manager or Coordinator of Student Interns)
