About The Position

The Speech Pathologist is expected to perform at a novice to advanced beginner level of practice, particularly within a hospital-based setting. This role involves conducting assessments and therapeutic interventions for routine patient populations, as well as supporting team efforts through departmental tasks, problem-solving, and intervention skills. Upon successful completion of their Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) and with Department Manager approval, the Speech Pathologist may orient other allied health professionals. They may also provide student experiences with approval from the Coordinator of Student Supervision. Requirements

  • License (or licensure eligible) from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or Clinical Fellowship Year candidate
  • Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP (for continued employment)
  • Current CCC in SLP (for continued employment, CFY incumbents must complete CFY and be awarded CCC at conclusion of 1st year of employment)
  • CPR certification (for continued employment)
  • New graduate/CFY’s to SLP’s with less than two (2) years of experience (Strong Clinical Fellowship Year candidates will be considered)
  • Previous clinical experience with evaluation/ treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders
  • Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments
  • Previous experience planning and executing treatment
  • Master's Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology
  • Competes required learning exchange courses

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders
  • Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders
  • Previous work experience in a critical care setting
  • Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems
  • Clinical rotations during graduate training in medical setting

Responsibilities

  • Perform assessments and therapeutic interventions with the routine patient population
  • Support team endeavors by performing department and/or team tasks, problem solving and intervention skills
  • Orient other allied health professionals to their field upon the successful completion of their CFY year with the approval of the Department Manager
  • Provide student experiences per approval of the Coordinator of Student Supervision
  • Schedule frequency and intensity of therapy for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Select assessment instruments and administer assessment for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Interpret results for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Complete documentation for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Plan and carry out treatment strategies for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Develop long- and short-term goals for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Perform patient/family/staff education for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Report at patient/family/team conferences for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Terminate therapy when appropriate for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders
  • Provide student supervision if deemed competent to do so by Department Manager or Coordinator of Student Interns
