The Specialty Pharmacy Manager leads Riverside's specialty pharmacy services and supports execution of strategic priorities. This position is highly visible to key stakeholders and serves as a liaison to clinics, providers, payers, and internal partners to advance the specialty pharmacy vision, improve access and outcomes, and support Riverside's strategic goals. The Manager leads and develops supervisors and frontline teams, ensuring optimal dispensing, prior authorization and benefits investigation workflows, clinical monitoring, patient outreach, and coordination with providers and payers. This role is ultimately accountable for day-to-day specialty pharmacy operations & clinical services, including staffing, workflow management, accreditation and regulatory readiness, financial performance, and delivery of high-quality, patient-centered services.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree, or higher in Pharmacy (Required)
  • 3 years of pharmacy supervisory or higher experience OR 2 years with completion of an ASHP Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency Program (Required)
  • Licensed Pharmacist - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) within 60 Days(Required)
  • Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) - The Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board (SPCB) within 5 years (Required)
  • 340B University OnDemand - Apexus within 180 Days(Required)
  • Knowledge of specialty pharmacy operations, access workflows (prior authorization/benefit investigation), accreditation standards (URAC/ACHC), and regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of specialty therapeutic areas, chronic therapies, and common access or adherence barriers.
  • Knowledge of workflow design, dispensing systems, technology platforms, and basic data/analytics tools.
  • Understanding of quality management, safety practices, and operational performance improvement
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills with the ability to coach, develop, and hold supervisors, pharmacists, and technicians accountable
  • Skilled in analyzing operational, clinical, and financial data to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills with providers, payers, staff, and internal partners.
  • Skilled in organizing workflows, coordinating resources, and managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to make timely, sound business and operational decisions—often with limited or evolving data—and to track outcomes, adjust strategies, and pivot effectively to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to lead daily specialty pharmacy operations and ensure consistent, compliant, high-quality service.
  • Ability to implement process improvements, technology changes, and workflow optimizations.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships across clinics, providers, and internal departments.
  • Ability to maintain accountability, service excellence, and team engagement while adapting to changing operational demands.

Responsibilities

  • Stakeholder Engagement & Service Line Integration: Serve as the primary liaison to clinics, providers, payers, and internal partners; communicate performance, resolve issues, and lead new program or clinic implementation
  • Operational Leadership & Daily Performance: Lead and own specialty pharmacy operations, ensuring reliable workflows, accurate dispensing, proper staffing, and consistent execution of procedures and performance standards
  • Clinical & Access Program Execution: Direct ownership and execution of specialty clinical workflows, prior authorization/benefit investigation, refill coordination, adherence support, patient communication, and ensure timely patient access and continuity of care
  • Talent Management & Leadership Development: Lead a high-performing team including leaders through effective talent management, hiring, workforce planning, optimal staffing ratios, coaching, performance evaluation, accountability to goals, leadership development, and succession planning Support team through staffing as needed
  • Financial Stewardship & Productivity: Manage daily financial and productivity performance, including inventory, labor utilization, reimbursement practices, waste reduction, and adherence to budget expectations
  • Quality, Safety, Accreditation & Compliance: Maintain compliance with URAC/ACHC standards and all regulatory requirements; oversee quality metrics, safety practices, audit readiness, and corrective actions
  • Innovation & Best Practice Implementation: Identify and implement workflow, technology, and process improvements that enhance efficiency and support pharmacy’s strategic initiatives
  • Professional Leadership & National Engagement: Stay current on specialty pharmacy best practices; participate in benchmarking and professional activities that strengthen Riverside’s specialty pharmacy model.
