This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio office 2 days per week on Wednesdays & Thursdays. About the Role We’re looking for a Specialist, Software Engineer to join Nationwide Financial and our Annuity Technology team with a focus on Correspondence . This role is essential in enabling the generation and delivery of accurate, timely, and compliant communications to our members—supporting both New Business and Post-Issue transactions. In this role, you’ll engineer the rules, look & feel, and workflow components that produce a variety of member-facing correspondence, including contract packages, confirms, systematic letters, and quarterly/year‑end statements. You’ll work within an agile, product-centric team and collaborate closely with Product Owners, Technology Analysts, fellow Engineers & Quality Engineers, and Business SMEs to build scalable, modern correspondence solutions. This is a hands-on engineering opportunity to work across rule engines, workflow platforms, and data integrations—shaping the future of how we communicate with our members.

Requirements

  • Proven track record of architecting complex systems in large-scale enterprise environments
  • Strong ability to influence technical direction and drive modernization initiatives
  • Experience working in agile product teams and a passion for continuous improvement
  • Experience mentoring engineers and promoting best practices
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
  • Completion of undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.
  • Four or more years of analysis and technology experience.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript.
  • Strong knowledge of software development lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to tackle complex business and development problems.
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Correspondence Engineering & Delivery Build and enhance capabilities that consume required data to generate correspondence outputs.
  • Engineer solutions to deliver correspondence to downstream applications for archiving, printing, or electronic delivery.
  • Support all correspondence types, including: Systematic letters (e.g., systematic withdrawals start/stop, death benefit events, recurring transactions) Confirms (financial transaction confirmations) Contract packages Quarterly and year‑end statements Other post-issue and regulatory communications
  • Implement and maintain OpenRules logic that governs correspondence templates across product, state, and regulatory combinations.
  • Build and optimize Spring Boot services supporting correspondence generation and integrations.
  • Configure and enhance Quadient workflows —system that manages presentation, layout, and orchestration of correspondence components.
  • Quality, Collaboration, & Agile Delivery Partner with Technology Analyst to understand data mapping, business rules, and user stories.
  • Collaborate with Quality Engineers to ensure accurate rule execution, template rendering, and workflow functionality.
  • Participate actively in agile ceremonies: sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily standups, and team demos.
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and psychological safety.
