Lead Building Engineer – JLL What this job involves: As a Lead Building Engineer at JLL, you'll take ownership of critical facility operations, ensuring optimal performance of all building systems in a complex, mission-critical environment. This leadership role combines hands-on technical expertise with strategic oversight, requiring you to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair sophisticated facility equipment while coordinating preventative maintenance programs. You'll serve as the technical expert and primary point of contact for building operations, demonstrating mastery in one craft area—whether Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations—while maintaining multi-skilled capabilities across all systems. Your work directly impacts building reliability, tenant satisfaction, and JLL's reputation for operational excellence, making this position essential to our service delivery commitment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of building engineering experience in commercial or critical facility environments
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in at least one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations) with multi-skilled capabilities across other building systems
  • Proven ability to diagnose complex problems independently, make sound decisions under pressure, and prioritize, schedule, and complete multiple tasks with minimal supervision while meeting project deadlines
  • Strong communication skills including professional email correspondence with leadership, clients, and cross-functional departments, coupled with excellent follow-up capabilities and attention to detail
  • Physical capability to operate electric hand tools, work on ladders, carry tools and equipment, and lift/carry up to fifty pounds regularly throughout shifts
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and work order management systems (Corrigo or similar CMMS platforms)
  • Availability for on-call emergency response outside regular business hours to address critical facility issues

Nice To Haves

  • Industry-recognized certifications such as Universal CFC, Electrical, HVAC, or Stationary Engineering licenses depending on craft specialty
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Energy Management Systems (EMS) for monitoring and controlling facility operations
  • Prior experience in client-facing roles demonstrating ability to explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders and manage expectations professionally
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety standards, lockout/tagout procedures, and confined space entry protocols in commercial building environments
  • Background in mission-critical facilities such as data centers, hospitals, laboratories, or high-rise commercial properties where uptime is essential
  • Track record of implementing or improving preventive maintenance programs that reduced equipment downtime or extended asset life
  • Experience mentoring or training junior technicians in building operations, safety procedures, and technical troubleshooting methods

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, operate, and perform preventive maintenance on all building systems including fire/life safety, HVAC, plumbing, electrical (lighting, UPS, generators, switchgear), emergency backup systems, and hot water systems to ensure continuous, reliable operation
  • Schedule and coordinate preventative maintenance activities with minimal disruption to building services, performing tasks directly or delegating appropriately to qualified vendors while maintaining oversight
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment issues across refrigeration, chilled water, air conditioning equipment, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and related mechanical/electrical systems, recording readings and making adjustments to optimize performance
  • Create, manage, and complete work orders in Corrigo on time, providing weekly status reports to ensure transparency and maintaining high-level communication with clients and stakeholders regarding resolution steps, timelines, and impact
  • Order necessary parts and equipment for repairs, maintenance, and new installations while managing inventory levels and ensuring all work adheres to JLL's quality standards, safety protocols, and critical environment specifications
  • Serve as the technical representative in client meetings and vendor negotiations, demonstrating professionalism while providing hands-on instruction in maintenance procedures, safety practices, and proper tool usage
  • Maintain compliance with departmental policies for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials while keeping the workplace clean, safe, and organized according to all safety processes and regulations
