About The Position

Great Plains Manufacturing is currently seeking a Special Projects Technician to fabricate, machine, weld, and assemble components of machinery, equipment, physical structures and finished products. This position works Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in our Salina, KS location. Overtime on Fridays may be required, as needed.

Requirements

  • Proficient in using precision measuring instruments
  • 1-3 years’ welding experience
  • 1-3 years’ experience with shop equipment including band saw, lathe, table saw, drill press, shear, brake, wire/arc welder, plasma, gas torch, etc.
  • Ability to obtain Great Plains Mfg forklift license
  • Ability to work with minimal or no supervision
  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
  • Must be self-motivated and a self-starter
  • Must have a high regard for quality and quantity of work

Nice To Haves

  • Electrical, mechanical and plumbing skills desirable
  • Position requires some travel mainly between facilities, possibly overnight
  • Possess or ability to pass CDL test preferred
  • Ability to pass DOT physical and obtain DOT medical certificate

Responsibilities

  • Follow all Great Plains and OSHA safety regulations and wear prescribed safety and protective equipment
  • Lay out, fabricate, assemble, and install structural and mechanical parts and assemblies following engineering information, using precision instruments, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Verify dimensions of parts using precision measuring instruments. Drill, countersink, and ream holes in parts and assemblies for bolts, rivets, and other fasteners, using power tools
  • Align and join structural assemblies, using transit, sight level, hand tools, power tools, clamps, and fasteners
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions, and adjust amperage, voltage, and speed during joining to assure required weld deposit
  • Smooth flat and contoured surfaces, using scrapers, abrasive stones, and power grinders, and fit and assemble parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms using hand tools
  • Inspect grooves, angles, gap allowances, and related aspects of assembly to ensure conformance to specifications, using micrometer, caliper, and related precision measuring instruments
  • Observe dimension tolerance, and other tests on welded surfaces to evaluate quality of weld and conformance to production requirements
  • Test functional performance of installed parts. Confer with engineers to resolve production issues
  • Set up and operate shop equipment, such as band saw, lathe, table saw, drill press, shear, brake, wire/arc welder, plasma, and gas torch to shape and form parts
  • May fabricate or modify tooling, such as jigs, fixtures, templates, and form blocks
  • May set up and operate machine tools, such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verify conformance of machined parts to specifications
  • Monitor Special Projects tasks and recommend quality improvement initiatives to the Special Projects Lead
  • Other duties may be assigned that require other qualifications, physical demands, and/or work environment
