About The Position

Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector's Office is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Special Inventory Tax Lead Deputy Specialist II to join our team. The Special Inventory Tax (SIT) Lead Deputy Specialist II plays a key role in overseeing and supporting the daily operations of the SIT team. This position is responsible for training team members, assigning and monitoring workloads, and ensuring compliance with applicable tax laws. The Lead Deputy Specialist II manages open records requests for the County Attorney, prepares and distributes daily SIT reports, explains shortage bills to dealers, and responds to dealer questions and concerns. Additional responsibilities include sorting and organizing monthly statements and declarations, updating and maintaining rejection files, categorizing statements with and without payments, and mailing required correspondence. This is a full-time, in-office position. Remote work is not available unless specifically authorized based on operational needs About the Tax Assessor-Collector The Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector's Office is essential for ensuring the proper administration of tax laws and providing vital services to the community. The office plays a key role in local government, handling various financial and administrative tasks, including: Property Tax Collection: Assess and collect property taxes for all eligible commercial and residential property owners and entities. Calculate property taxes based on appraised values and ensure collection and distribution to the appropriate entities. Motor Vehicle Services: Manage commercial and residential vehicle registration, issue license plates, and handle vehicle title transfers, including the collection of associated fees. Voter Registration: Oversee voter registration within the county, issue voter registration certificates, and maintain an accurate voter registration roll. Additional Revenue Collection: Collecting certain fees, fines, and revenues related to permits or state mandates, depending on the county's needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited U.S. institution.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in clerical and/or administrative experience in tax, finance, or accounting-related role.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in handling customer service inquiries and conflict resolution.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience in a leadership role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of special inventory tax regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Advanced understanding of tax records management and reporting procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of open records request processing and legal guidelines.
  • Customer service principles and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and tax-related software systems.
  • Leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to train and mentor staff.
  • Organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Proficient in handling sensitive information with confidentiality.
