About The Position

This position exists to provide special education services and supports and classroom instruction to committed youth.  The position provides special education services to students with special education needs as identified in an Individualized Education Program (IEP), as well as support to staff.  The teacher will develop IEPs in collaboration with parents, students, and other team members  and in accordance with all special education laws and guidelines.  The teacher will enter all special education records/documents into the online IEP system.  Will be competent in administering, analyzing and interpreting educational assessments as prescribed by DYS.  The teacher takes responsibility for knowledge and implementation of special education laws and DYS special education procedures.  The incumbant in this position must have a valid CDE license for Special Education. This position may be permanently assigned to a different content area or CTE teaching as determined by business need or supervisor expectation and/or assigned for other needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment.
  • Current Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education.
  • Must have a current and valid CDE Professional Teaching License; with an endorsement in Special Education.
  • Must be 21 years old or older.
  • Travel - Must travel to training events and shadowing events in Denver area and other state facilities.
  • Special Qualifications - CDE Professional Teaching License; in Special Education License.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the DYS Pre-service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO) and mandatory annual training in all subject areas.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant's prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.

Responsibilities

  • Teach-Direct & Indirect Instruction. Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive learning environment. This includes maintaining a schedule of classes each day to support the needs of special education students to ensure a full continuum of services is available. Classes will be co planned and co taught. Pull out services will be planned and documented topics and time will be available. The special education teacher schedule will be based on the needs of the students. This will include both academic and social/emotion or executive functioning skills. A CDE license for special education is required for these services.
  • This position may be required to teach content classes, CTE courses, or other courses as required by the principal or other supervisor. This would continue to require standards-based instruction, daily and monthly unit plans, and ongoing assessments for and of learning. Data would be required to be furnished for youth progress on IEP goals, MTSS, and other identified areas. Serve as a substitute when directed. Other duties as assigned.
  • Special Education Paperwork & Safety, Culture, and Other Content. For special education teacher, paperwork and data collection within the timelines is required. Adhering to DYS comprehensive plan is required. This includes ongoing collaboration and information sharing in appropriate venues to include documentation tools not limited to the IEP system. This also includes daily attendance, weekly grades, weekly behavior monitoring, ongoing planning and implementation, daily learning goals and objectives, data tracking and other duties as assigned. This may include other assigned content areas for youth and knowing and using the technology in the building. Will use calendar for meetings to include IEP meetings, MTSS meetings, BID meetings, and any MDTs. Must assure safety procedures and practices are followed to include all policy and expectations. This includes following the Code of Conduct and Sanctuary procedures. This also includes following leave procedures. Other duties as assigned.
