About The Position

Third Way Center's Joan Farley Academy, Brill Campus, is looking for a full time, CDE licensed, Special Education Teacher to work as a member of our team working with our high risk youth ages 13-20. We are looking for a creative and dynamic set of people who like to be challenged and seek to learn and better themselves professionally and personally. Strong classroom management skills needed. The teacher’s primary responsibility is to perform all duties in a manner that is reflective of the mission and philosophy of Third Way Center. The teacher shall be sensitive to the cultural differences among the children, families, and Third Way Center staff and respond appropriately to these differences. The teacher is required to manage the classroom and maintain high expectations for student achievement in an alternative high school setting. Our mission is to provide a continuum of services where at-risk youth can work through their trauma and learn to take responsibility for their actions and lives to become productive members of society. Our teachers are active members of the school and treatment team that carry out our programmatic goals as well as work with the youth on their educational goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a field of study related to the work assignment, along with a valid Colorado Initial or Professional Secondary Teacher license with an endorsement in SPED from CDE.
  • The candidate must also possess a current valid Colorado driver's license, have a clean driving record(no DUI/DWAI in the last five years) and criminal record, be at least 22 years of age and be able to obtain QMAP, and CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Additionally, the candidate must pass an extensive background and DMV check.
  • We follow Federal Drug Screening laws.

Responsibilities

  • Teach youth different skills based on their current abilities in order to enhance their opportunity for normalization and self determination
  • Maintain classroom management including counseling and crisis intervention when needed
  • Work as a team and take direction considering students’ needs
  • Create and implement lessons for each class period
  • Provide course outlines/syllabi for each class before each semester
  • Prepare lesson plans if absent
  • Obtain approval from Educational Coordinator for films and other curricular materials
  • Determine and report individual student grades using Infinite Campus gradebook
  • Responsible for special education processes and documents, including initial evaluations, reevaluations, annual reviews, transfer, amendments, FBA, BIP, Notice of Graduation, Summary of Performance, etc. (support provided)
  • Ensure all Personal Learning Plans and Individualized Education Plans are in compliance
  • Professional communication with parents/professionals as needed (report cards, IEP progress reports, post-secondary planning, etc.)
  • Create an Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) for each homeroom student
  • Support post-secondary planning for students
  • Attend and participate in all in-service activities
  • Attend professional staffing's for students, when possible, as needed
  • Attend morning staff meetings each morning
  • Attend staff development meetings each week, as scheduled
  • Knowledge of the histories and IEP's for all youth in order to give individualized care
  • Interact with residential houses on campus to coordinate care, including providing written daily updates
  • Work within course budget
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Educational Coordinator/Principal
