Requirements

  • Equivalent work experience may substitute for education.
  • Minimum 6 months experience or training in a health care setting and/or in interpreting
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English and language pair. (High proficiency)
  • Ability to interact with a variety of families and health care professionals. (High proficiency)
  • Mastery of medical and colloquial terminology in both languages. (High proficiency)
  • Skill in typing and computer word processing. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to respond to a variety of demands in a professional manner, including prioritizing multiple requests. (High proficiency)
  • Spanish proficiency as tested by ALTA, score 9 or higher (High proficiency)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university related to languages, communication, or health care field
  • Formal medical interpreter training
  • Current and valid certifications as a Certified Medical Interpreter or Certified Healthcare Interpreter

Responsibilities

  • Interprets on-site for non-English speaking patients and families during encounters in the hospital or clinics with physicians, nurses, staff members, and (possibly) outside agencies. These encounters include hospital admissions, hospital discharges, clinic visits, surgeries, diagnostics, and emergency department visits.
  • Displays cultural sensitivity, awareness and respect to all parties involved that makes possible conditions of mutual trust.
  • Prioritizes requests appropriately.
  • Documents encounters (admission, discharge, consents, clinic appointment) manually or electronically.
  • Translates basic written patient discharge instructions as appropriate.
  • Interprets by phone for pre-op orders, test results, clinic appointments, nursing triage calls, and other information as needed.
  • Coordinates with supervisor or scheduler regarding specific patient/family communication and scheduling needs.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section
  • Educates staff and parents as to role of interpreters, both through formal training (inpatient teaching rounds, grand rounds, nursing orientation, and departmental staff meetings), and informal continuous teaching opportunities.
