About The Position

The Evergreen State College invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) tenure track faculty position in our Evergreen Tacoma curriculum program, beginning Fall Quarter 2026. We seek candidates with expertise in the a social science disciplines and a strong foundation in interdisciplinary teaching. Those with a focus on community-based research are especially encouraged to apply. Faculty will collaborate closely with Evergreen Tacoma colleagues to deliver an interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum shaped by annual themes. Current areas of study offered at Evergreen Tacoma which this position would look to complement include Environmental Studies, Literature, Public Health, Mathematics, Cultural Studies, and Writing. Our program is rooted in a "learning in community" model that emphasizes co-learning, co-teaching, and deep collaboration. Located in Tacoma's historic Hilltop neighborhood-approximately 60 miles from our main campus in Olympia, Evergreen Tacoma serves a vibrant and diverse student body. Successful candidates will demonstrate a passion for teaching and a proven ability to engage adult learners, whose average age is 37. In addition to our in-person enrollment of up to 250 students, we offer robust online and hybrid learning options that continue to expand access and reach. Our teaching philosophy centers on student-driven learning, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, effective communication, and collaborative skills. Faculty at Evergreen Tacoma teach within a coordinated studies model, working as part of an interdisciplinary team with a student-to-faculty ratio of 20:1. This approach requires thoughtful planning and extensive collaboration, including regular team meetings and shared curriculum development. Faculty also engage in independent preparation to ensure continuity and depth in student learning experiences. This role emphasizes co-teaching, community engagement, and a student-centered approach that supports adult learners in developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills. Our teaching is student-centered, which means we are interested in helping students develop strong skills in critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaborative work. Because over 80% of our students come from underserved and marginalized groups, we are particularly invested in approaches to teaching that emphasize diversity and equity, that provide opportunities for challenge and growth, and that foster a learning environment where all are welcome and all can learn from each other. Requirements

  • A terminal degree in a social science field, especially sociology, psychology, anthropology or other social science discipline.
  • 2 - 5 years of experience providing educational opportunities for adult learners
  • 2 - 5 years of experience working with various ethnic cultures
  • Demonstrated experience with culturally responsive communication styles
  • Demonstrated experience with concepts in community-based research

Nice To Haves

  • Competencies teaching in concert with artificial intelligence, including awareness and management of biases often embedded in generative AI models.
  • Experience coaching non-traditional adult learners through internships and independent learning curricula design
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with other professional educators, particularly in curriculum design and team teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience with inclusive, culturally sustaining and linguistically diverse instructional strategies
