About The Position

Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a Social Media Manager in Richmond, Virginia. The Social Media Manager owns Carter's presence across all platforms — building strategy, driving content, and translating what's trending in culture into what's relevant for our brand and our customers.

Requirements

  • Platform fluency across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube — you know each one's culture, algorithm, and content sweet spot
  • Proficient in social media management and scheduling platforms (Sprout Social or similar)
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, spot trends, and make data-driven decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills — you write in a human voice, not corporate-speak
  • Proven track record of growing social presence and connecting content strategy to business goals
  • High cultural awareness and a sharp editorial filter — you know what's trending and what actually belongs in the Carter story
  • Strong business acumen; able to translate brand objectives into compelling content that moves the needle
  • Self-directed and fast-moving — you don't wait to be told what to post
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders without losing momentum or quality
  • Strong PC skills and a genuine desire to stay ahead of evolving tools and technology
  • Willing to travel, including overnight trips
  • Committed to Carter's Core Values: Integrity, Commitment, Excellence, and Teamwork
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3–6 years of experience in social media management with a demonstrated focus on multi-platform storytelling and community growth

Nice To Haves

  • You have a genuine passion for social media — this isn't just a job, it's what you do
  • Experience with co-branding and/or sports/event partnerships
  • Comfort setting boundaries to protect the integrity of social channels (not every request belongs on social, and you know how to navigate that)
  • A test-and-learn mindset — you're not precious about ideas, you're excited to iterate
  • Contagious energy and a positive attitude that makes the team better

Responsibilities

  • Strategy Development: Develop and implement social media strategies aligned with overall business goals, including thought leadership and full online presence ownership. You bring the ideas — and the plan to execute them.
  • Content: Ideate, create, curate, schedule, and post fresh, platform-native content across multiple channels and audiences. You know what works on each platform and why. Define and document Carter's social voice and tone while respecting established brand standards.
  • Campaign Execution: Plan and execute social media campaigns that drive awareness, engagement, and business results. You move fast and follow through.
  • Community Management: Monitor and actively engage with followers, respond to interactions, and build online communities that reflect the Carter brand with energy and authenticity.
  • Performance Analysis: Own the numbers. Track KPIs, analyze performance data, and translate insights into action. Reporting isn't a chore — it's how you get better.
  • Trend Monitoring: You're already watching what's happening in social before anyone asks. You filter what's relevant to Carter's story and act on it quickly and thoughtfully.
  • Paid Campaign Management: Manage social media advertising campaigns and budgets to amplify reach and drive measurable outcomes.
  • Influencer Relations: Identify and engage with influencers and brand advocates who authentically align with the Carter brand.
  • Content Calendar: Own and maintain a forward-looking content calendar that keeps us consistent, timely, and strategic. Collaborate with Caterpillar Social Media on co-branding opportunities.
  • Customer Service: Monitor and respond to customer inquiries and comments on social — representing the Carter brand with professionalism and care.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
