About The Position

The Simulation Engineer reports to the EMS Controls Engineering Manager and will be responsible for designing, developing, and configuring PSCAD models for supporting Power Plant Controller (PPC) deployments within the Energy Management System for Energy Storage Systems (ESS). This position will contribute by having their solid foundation in power system modeling and digital control system automation. The position will be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in PSCAD and benchmark results against control HIL (cHIL) simulations with Typhoon HIL hardware. This position also involves troubleshooting control logic interactions with various OEM inverter controllers. Essential duties and responsibilities are included, but are not limited to the following:

Requirements

  • Modeling of electrical power system equipment and source impedance, steady state and transient power flow analysis.
  • Creation of test plans and procedures to validate power plant controller hardware in loop testing.
  • Load type modeling and transient load variant flicker.
  • Knowing how to analysis power quality issues such as Voltage flicker, harmonics, and power system stability.
  • Working knowledge on converter and/or inverter embedded control loops.
  • Substation design and distribution automation transfer schemes.
  • Digital Fault Recorders and PMU Channel streams with a Power System Dynamics understanding.
  • EMS and SCADA implementation for utility-scale IBR systems or substations.
  • Understanding on what digital signal processing (DSP) means the difference between analog and digital signals.
  • Typhoon HIL Simulation software center
  • RTDS simulation software center skills that are transferable to Typhoon.
  • AcSELerator RTAC Programming in IEC 61131 PLC programming language.
  • Supporting skills including Python 3.0, TCP network management, Fiber network technology such as RSTP.
  • Controls protocols such as TCP/Modbus, C37.112, IEC61850, MQTT, P2P, TCP/DNP3.0
  • Data Collection methods and analysis to interpret simulation results and create reports and graphs for confirmation of successful runs.
  • Basic hands-on electrical skills involved in physically deploying HIL simulation equipment or working on low voltage instrumentation & controls (I&C circuits (less than 24Vdc)
  • Maintain the highest degree of honesty and integrity.
  • Adaptable and keep a positive attitude when working under pressure or shifting requirements.
  • Protect confidential information by not communicating, disclosing to, or using it for benefit of 3rd parties. Intellectual Property protection of the EMS Platform is of utmost importance.
  • Self-directed project management skills to lead initiatives to completion.
  • Comply with all EHS policies, practices and procedures reporting all unsafe activities to Management and/or Human Resources.
  • Highly competitive, self-starter that can work both individually and in a group setting.
  • Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of four (4) years in related experience in the field.
  • Experience in transient simulations with Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) with integration of PSCAD controllers.
  • Experience with power systems transient simulations in at least one of the following technologies is a must: PSCAD, Typhoon HIL, RTDS.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% of the time, including international travel, to support the deployment of the Platform if necessary.
  • Regularly required to stand and walk.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Ideal if candidate has experience in working on or with (IBR) technology.

Responsibilities

  • Create PPC models in PSCAD and test responses to closely model the responses from field measurements. This includes all PID loops and real and reactive stacked power functions.
  • Lead 3rd party PSCAD study efforts by creating PPC control loop specification drawings and provide other OEM technical information like inverter models. Receive models from 3rd party and review results and implement improvements.
  • Improve the PPC and Inverter models to more closely align responses with reality. design and other technical information from suppliers and contractors, including PSCAD studies and PPC control loop specification documents for transient studies.
  • Develop and maintain design, solution, and component specifications that are part of the PSCAD PPC model to support controls logic testing and validation, either for new unit code implementations or production support issues.
  • Collaborate with the HIL Engineer in the future development of Typhoon HIL simulation project files and integrate HIL Connect modules with IO modules.
  • Assist in SEL735, SEL700G, and SEL3555 hardware devices that are connected to the HIL testbed. Also included will be to deploy TCP/Modbus or C37.112 PMU servers or clients that interface with production power plant controllers by implementation of emulators.
  • Assist in battery power plant (BPP) Commissioning operations efforts including power dispatch, troubleshooting discrete HW issues, and coordinating with Commissioning Leads.
