About The Position

Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 15,500 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. Our District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9 - 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City. The Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 has set an ambitious agenda for change, guided by the belief that all children, regardless of circumstances, can achieve at high levels and academic gaps can and will be eliminated with the support of teachers who deliver engaging, relevant, and academically rigorous instruction that excites students and instills a love of learning in them. The educational interpreter is directly responsible to the Director of Special Education Early Childhood and Elementary Programs or their designee, the assigned teacher of hearing impaired, and the building principal. The educational interpreter's primary function is to facilitate communication among hearing impaired students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system. Requirements

  • Hearing Impaired Interpreter certification or registration ISBE approved;
  • Paraprofessional License
  • Endorsement(s): Paraprofessional Educator Pre-Kindergarten through Age 21

Nice To Haves

  • Interpreting experience (including internship) in an educational setting within the last five years preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting and/or transliterating in mainstream classes as assigned;
  • Provide interpreting and/or transliterating for extracurricular activities, parent meetings, conferences and tutoring as needed and as qualified;
  • Provide note taking services for hearing impaired students when necessary and when interpreting is not needed;
  • Participate in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress of the individual educational plan, providing insight on the status of communication strategies in the mainstream classroom;
  • Provide information to the classroom teacher, deaf and hearing students and other staff to maximize benefit of interpreting services;
  • Meet regularly with classroom teacher and teacher of hearing impaired concerning communication needs of the students;
  • Participate in professional improvement activities;
  • Ability to interpreter/transliterate (expressive and voice) at a normal conversational rate, American Sign Language, Pidgin Sign English;
  • Ability to interpret/transliterate at the level of the student's understanding.
  • As assigned, provide one on one assistance to students;
  • Follow all district and building rules, regulations and procedures and adhere to negotiated contracts provisions;
  • Uphold the ethical standards of Waukegan Public Schools. For example, confidentiality;
  • Responsible to report all personal absences to the building principal or designee;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
