About The Position

The Shop Fabrication Manager is responsible for directing all activities within the fabrication facility to ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient production of structural steel, piping, modular assemblies, and specialty metalwork. This role requires expertise in fabrication processes, strong leadership skills, and the ability to coordinate schedules, manpower, equipment, and quality expectations in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate combines technical fabrication knowledge with strong communication and organizational abilities.

Requirements

  • 5–10+ years of fabrication shop experience with increasing leadership responsibility.
  • Strong knowledge of welding, structural steel, piping, and industrial fabrication practices.
  • Understanding of AWS, ASME, and related fabrication/welding codes.
  • Strong leader with the ability to motivate, direct, and mentor crews.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Highly organized with strong planning and follow-through.
  • Ability to read drawings, interpret fabrication details, and solve problems quickly.
  • Proficiency with fabrication management software, scheduling tools, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to review and interpret blueprints, weld maps, and shop documentation.
  • High school education.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily shop operations, including fabrication planning, scheduling, and production output.
  • Manage material flow, work orders, cut lists, fabrication drawings, and resource allocation.
  • Ensure production meets customer requirements, project specifications, and delivery timelines.
  • Drive continuous improvement in throughput, tooling, layout, and shop productivity.
  • Enforce safety policies and maintain a culture of zero incidents.
  • Ensure all work complies with engineering drawings, welding codes, and company standards.
  • Collaborate with QC to verify weld procedures, inspections, and documentation are accurate.
  • Conduct daily safety briefings, shop audits, and follow corrective action.
  • Supervise welders, fitters, fabricators, helpers, and support staff.
  • Manage hiring, skills assessments, training, and team development.
  • Coordinate overtime needs, shift planning, and staffing requirements.
  • Lead with professionalism and maintain strong morale, communication, and accountability.
  • Work directly with Project Management, Engineering, and Procurement to ensure alignment.
  • Forecast manpower, equipment, and material needs for upcoming workloads.
  • Support estimating with fabrication hours, shop rates, and technical input.
  • Maintain equipment, tools, consumables, and shop readiness.
