About The Position

We are seeking a compassionate and reliable Shelter Support Staff member to join our team. This part-time position plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and smooth daily operations of the shelter. The role also offers the opportunity to pick up additional shifts when other staff are unavailable.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1–2 years of customer service experience desirable.
  • Familiarity with local support groups and agencies serving the homeless population.
  • Experience monitoring entry points, security cameras, or maintaining a safe environment highly desirable.
  • Experience in de-escalating tense situations or providing support during crises.
  • Clear verbal and written communication for documenting incidents and relaying information.
  • Skills in greeting visitors, answering phones, and handling inquiries professionally.
  • Ability to interact with shelter residents, staff, and community members with compassion and respect.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries.
  • Ability to adapt to and embrace agency culture.
  • Basic computer skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily changes in admissions and discharges.
  • Address client conflicts and ensure safety concerns are managed.
  • Communicate issues requiring intervention to the Shelter Operations Manager and Shelter Services Manager.
  • Provide accurate information to clients or relay messages to the Client Support Representative.
  • Check and respond to emails daily, forwarding relevant messages to SSM, SOM, and CSR.
  • Document all events during the shift, including incident reports and rule violations.
  • Maintain logs and monitor security cameras.
  • Ensure cleanliness of office areas, recreation room, restrooms, and other common spaces daily (sweeping, mopping, surface cleaning).
  • Assist in coordinating donations and food deliveries with volunteer agencies.
  • Sort donations and discard unusable items.
  • Inspect food pantry and refrigerators weekly, discarding expired items.
  • Attend community meetings as assigned.
  • Complete special assignments as directed.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
