About The Position

Michael Baker International, consistently ranked as a Top 20 Transportation Firm, is seeking a Senior Transportation Modeler and Analyst. This role involves leading and supporting transportation forecasting, traffic simulation, traffic signal optimization, safety, and data-driven mobility analyses for public-sector planning and engineering projects. The Senior Transportation Modeler will be responsible for developing and applying regional travel demand and operational models, analyzing multimodal datasets, preparing technical reports and visualizations, and supporting various studies including corridor studies, long-range plans, safety evaluations, and scenario planning efforts. The position requires collaboration with an integrated team of professionals such as planners, traffic engineers, ITS specialists, GIS professionals, and data analysts to deliver innovative, data-driven solutions that enhance mobility, safety, traffic signal performance, and overall system operations. Additionally, the Senior Transportation Modeler will provide technical oversight to other transportation modelers through mentoring, training, and quality assurance/quality control of analyses and deliverables. Michael Baker International offers hybrid and flexible working arrangements for this position, with offices in Pennington, New Jersey; Newark, New Jersey; and New York City, requiring a hybrid arrangement within driving distance of these locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Planning, Geography, Data Science, or a related field
  • Minimum 6+ years of relevant experience in transportation modeling, traffic simulation, transportation analytics, or transportation planning
  • Demonstrated experience with regional travel demand models and/or corridor-and-network-level traffic simulation models
  • Proficiency with one or more transportation modeling and simulation platforms such as TransModeler, VISUM, VISSIM, Synchro, HCS, or similar tools
  • Experience with Python, R, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or other data analytics and visualization platforms
  • Familiarity with emerging data sources and platforms, such as probe vehicle data, connected vehicle data, Replica, StreetLight, or similar mobility datasets
  • Experience with GIS and spatial analysis tools, including Esri ArcGIS
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and communication skills
  • Experience preparing technical reports, memoranda, graphics, and presentations for public-sector clients
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, and deliver high quality work on schedule

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, calibration, validation, and application of regional travel demand models, corridor models, operational traffic simulation models, and traffic signal optimization analyses.
  • Conduct transportation forecasting and scenario analysis to support long-range planning, corridor studies, alternatives analysis, congestion management, traffic signal optimization, and other operational improvement projects.
  • Analyze multimodal transportation data, including traffic volumes, speeds, travel times, origin-destination patterns, transit data, signal timing and performance data, and emerging mobility data sources.
  • Develop technical methodologies and perform modeling, simulation, and traffic signal optimization analyses using industry-standard software and tools.
  • Interpret model outputs and translate findings into clear technical memoranda, reports, presentations, graphics, and client-facing recommendations.
  • Support planning and engineering studies involving roadway operations, traffic signal systems, transit, freight, active transportation, land use, safety, and resiliency.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate modeling and traffic signal optimization results into project development, planning studies, environmental documentation, and business case evaluations.
  • Prepare data visualizations, dashboards, exhibits, and maps to communicate analysis results effectively.
  • Provide technical oversight, quality control, and mentoring to junior staff involved in modeling, signal optimization, and analytics tasks.
  • Participate in client meetings, technical working groups, and stakeholder workshops; present modeling assumptions, methods, signal optimization strategies, and results to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support proposal development, scope preparation, staffing strategies, and technical approaches for transportation planning, modeling, and traffic signal optimization pursuits.
  • Support the development of automation tools and processes to enhance workflows related to microsimulation modeling.
  • Participate in and provide leadership to the Microsimulation Working Group within Michael Baker.
  • Support Michael Baker's traffic safety analytics team.
