About The Position

The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for the overall reliability, security, and lifecycle management of the Foundation’s technology platforms. In this role, you will design, implement, and optimize the core infrastructure, including server environments, virtualization, storage, backup, and foundational network services. You’ll play a key part in reducing operational risk by championing standardization, automation, and disciplined change management. Beyond day-to-day operations, you will serve as the primary lead for Tier III escalation support and incident response, providing the technical leadership necessary to resolve complex platform and infrastructure issues effectively.

Requirements

  • Infrastructure Expertise: You have at least 7 years of experience managing Windows servers and virtualization. You're comfortable overseeing the full lifecycle of compute, storage, and disaster recovery to keep systems reliable.
  • Automation and Networking: You're proficient in writing production grade PowerShell scripts with proper error handling. You also have a strong understanding of networking basics like DNS, DHCP, and VPNs.
  • Security and Compliance: You take a proactive approach to system safety. This includes experience with system hardening, patch compliance, and vulnerability remediation to keep data secure.
  • Technical Documentation: You're skilled at solving complex technical problems and creating clear runbooks. You enjoy building documentation and diagrams that help the rest of the team follow standard processes.
  • Leadership and Communication: You're a technical leader (as an individual contributor) who can manage projects and prioritize work effectively. You're also great at translating technical issues and project updates to non technical teammates.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee our server estate, including physical and virtual systems, to make sure they meet our needs for availability and performance.
  • Manage environments like VMware or Hyper-V to help us stay scalable and efficient.
  • Handle storage and backup solutions, including regular restore testing to ensure our data is always recoverable.
  • Manage patching and maintenance cycles for our operating systems, making sure changes are well-documented and have clear rollback plans.
  • Lead the recovery process when hardware or software fails and keep the impacted team members updated along the way.
  • Maintain the organization’s server infrastructure and operating systems to keep our foundational tech strong.
  • Monitor system performance and handle capacity planning so our resources stay ahead of business demands.
  • Work closely with OHSU IT groups to troubleshoot and resolve issues with network services like VPNs, firewalls, and Wi-Fi.
  • Collaborate with security teams to implement access controls and intrusion detection for our network.
  • Partner with security groups to operate the controls that keep our systems safe from unauthorized access.
  • Lead patch compliance and system hardening for Foundation-owned platforms to minimize risks.
  • Stay current on the latest security trends to help us implement the right configuration changes to stay protected.
  • Provide the evidence, documentation, and remediation plans needed to keep us compliant and prepared.
  • Contribute to our disaster recovery planning through technical testing and clear documentation.
  • Lead incident management for repeat issues, finding the root cause and planning how to fix it for good.
  • Use PowerShell to build automation for repeatable tasks, focusing on safe and efficient execution.
  • Evaluate new technologies that fit our needs and offer technical mentorship to other IT staff members.
  • Provide Tier III escalation support and help out with Tier II needs when the team needs extra capacity.
  • Help install or configure software and hardware for specific, time-sensitive projects.
  • Work with the Helpdesk, Data, and CRM teams to deliver better services through automation and standards.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects that help the Foundation reach its overall goals.
