About The Position

Metallurgists are responsible for technical direction and research execution related to work in new alloy design, processing and property optimization, microstructure quantification, root cause analysis for a manufacturing improvement, corrosion, and metallurgy-based service & repair work. Your primary responsibility in this job will be to provide technical leadership in projects focusing on alloy composition, microstructure, processing, and performance relationships. Our purpose is what ties us to one another and gives meaning to our work Job Description As a Senior Scientist - Metallurgy you will: Conduct research in an interdisciplinary team environment involving new alloy design, process optimization, property optimization, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvements, and metallurgy-based service & repair work for a variety of metallic materials systems. Participate in technology road mapping to drive new technology programs. Participate in the shaping, cultivation, and execution of government contracts. Author program proposals to external agencies that align with GE Aerospace technology roadmaps. Provide expertise to resolve technical challenges across the organization. Work across organizations, including interfacing with external agencies, GE Aerospace businesses and universities on project definition, technical approach, and execution. Rigorously develop program plans and budget forecasts for new start programs. Track progress toward milestone(s) completion and fiscally manage existing programs Share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations, written reports, and as appropriate through external and internal publications to GE Aerospace Research, GE Aerospace businesses, senior leadership teams, government agencies, and professional societies. Provide technical development across the organization through effective coaching/mentoring. Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment. Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.

Requirements

  • PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 7 years of professional experience or MS degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 10 years of additional experience in a research environment.
  • Experience of carrying out deep research in the field of alloy development, material & process modeling for metallic materials and process-microstructure-property understanding
  • Experience in the utilization of advanced characterization techniques (i.e. SEM, TEM, XRD), to understand the structure, processing and performance relationships and corrosion of metallic materials systems. Examples include Ni-superalloys, Titanium alloys, Aluminum alloys, High Entropy Alloys, and Refractory alloy systems.
  • Experience in the utilization of advanced techniques such as Thermo-calc to understand alloy design and phase stability.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment.
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
  • Desire and flexibility to contribute to projects across Metallurgy portfolio, including but not limited to magnetic materials, Al, Ti, Fe, Ni, Co, and Refractory based material systems.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the design, processing, and performance evaluation of superalloys material systems.
  • Experience in the metallurgy of materials made by additive manufacturing, including heat treatment optimization and mechanical performance understanding.
  • Experience in the use of computational materials science toward industrial research and development projects, including the application of machine learning and AI-based tools to materials-focused outcomes.
  • Experience leading programs funded through government agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment.
  • Strong patent, presentation, and publication record.
