About The Position

The National Fire Protection Association’s mission is to help save lives and reduce loss with information, knowledge, and passion. An international nonprofit established in 1896, we are dedicated to the elimination of death, injury, property, and economic loss due to fire, electrical, and related hazards. The Association delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach, and advocacy; and by partnering with others who share an interest in furthering the NFPA mission. Formed in 1982 as the research affiliate of NFPA, the Fire Protection Research Foundation is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to plan, manage and communicate research in support of the association. Since then, the Foundation has facilitated major research programs (both domestic and international in scope) that address industry challenges in multiple areas, including building fire protection strategies, impact of emerging technologies on fire safety, warehouse storage protection, energy transition, wildfire, firefighter health and safety, and firefighter protective clothing and equipment, among other issues. The NFPA Research Foundation is seeking a Senior Research Project Manager with experience in the energy transition space and fire protection systems. The role focuses on facilitation of research projects and programs through management of financials, communications, and technical support. This role also liaises with stakeholders to help shape the research, including representatives from the research community, fire protection industry, building design community, the fire service, NFPA technical committees, and other stakeholders. Findings from the Foundation’s critically applied research have been used by NFPA’s technical committee members and others to support the association’s fire and life safety codes and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Science 5-7 years of tangible engineering project management experience
  • Project Management cert. is a plus but must have project management experience
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the conduct of funded projects including the management of requests for proposals, project panel activities, sponsor communications, contractor progress and activities, and reports, to ensure successful project completion.
  • Grant writing and management
  • Collaborate with external partners to identify funding opportunities;
  • Lead the development, writing, and submission of competitive grant (federal or private) proposals to secure funding for research initiatives;
  • Manage awarded grants, ensuring compliance with grant or sponsor requirements, including timely reporting.
  • Develops technical and financial support for Foundation projects to meet budgetary and program objectives.
  • Manages project financials including budgeting, confirming and monitoring sponsor contributions, and monitoring of project costs including contracts and other project costs to meet project goals.
  • Facilitates research program planning in conjunction with Foundation planning councils, NFPA Technical Committees, and industry groups in order to document research agendas and support development of projects.
  • Implements communications within selected program areas including industry meetings, general Foundation outreach, and internal NFPA communications to maintain the Foundation’s public presence.
