About The Position

The Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs is an agency dedicated to serving those who served U.S. They are seeking a motivated, dynamic individual to join their team at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans' Nursing Home in Port Charlotte, Charlotte County, Florida. This skilled nursing facility offers excellent patient care resources, time allotment, a ceiling lift system in every patient room and bathroom, ample supplies and PPE equipment, a state-of-the-art smoke-free facility, and an on-site pharmacy. The incumbent is responsible for providing quality professional care to veteran residents, ensuring their health, safety, and security in accordance with established agency Standard Operating Procedures and the Nurse Practice Act. This includes initial and ongoing assessment of residents, administration of medications and treatments, monitoring and providing interventions, completing accurate clinical documentation, and providing supervision and guidance to RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and other Allied Health Care Professionals. The position works under the direct supervision of the Executive Nursing Director (DON) or designee. This is a continuous advertisement, and multiple positions, varied shifts, and OPS (Temporary) candidates may be selected from this advertisement within six months of the closing date.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Florida.
  • Must possess a valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR).
  • Must be able and willing to work on a schedule that includes weekends and holidays.
  • Three (3) years’ experience providing nursing services as a registered nurse in a long-term health care environment (nursing home; skilled nursing; or assisted living facility).
  • Must have at least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Successful completion of the due diligence process to include, but not limited to, a Level II background check and drug test.

  • Knowledgeable in the use of computer applications: Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality professional care to the veteran residents to ensure their health, safety, and security in accordance with established agency Standard Operating Procedures and Nurse Practice Act.
  • Provide initial and ongoing assessment of the resident population.
  • Perform assigned duties to include but not limited to administration of medications and treatments per MD order, monitoring and providing interventions to meet the needs of the resident, completing accurate clinical documentation reflective of resident’s status, and providing supervision and guidance to the RN, LPN, CNA and other Allied Health Care Professionals.
  • Supervise and direct nursing personnel on an assigned shift.
  • Ensure nursing personnel follow job descriptions, and the residents receive total quality nursing care.
  • Review shift assignments and ensure that the assignments reflect the ability of the staff person to meet the specific nursing care needs of the residents.
  • Ensure that work assignments are written, dated, and posted.
  • Receive notices of absence when nursing staff calls off, and coordinates assignments to maintain regulatory compliance and meet the needs of the residents.
  • Assist with coverage on the floor as needed.
  • Notify Administrator and/or DON of any emergency situations in the building.
  • Make rounds to observe residents and determine if nursing needs are being met.
  • Observe all nursing staff giving care at least once during an eight-hour shift.
  • Maintain the standards of nursing care and implement the policies and procedures of the facility and nursing department.
  • Follow all local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Comply and perform within the scope of practice as defined by the Florida Nursing Practice Act.
  • Assist in review of policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that reference material at the nurses’ stations is current.
  • Make recommendations to DON for improved and/or additional items.
  • Educate subordinates as necessary.
  • Ensure time sheets and payroll is done accurately and timely.
  • Discipline staff as per FDVA policy to correct poor performance.
  • Review and follow-up incidents and/or complaints occurring on assigned tour of duty.
  • Complete reports and forward to DON/RN.
  • Ensure that all verbal orders, including telephone orders from attending physicians are reviewed by a registered nurse.
  • If no RN is available, receive all telephone orders from physicians.
  • Give Basic Life Support (CPR) when necessary.
  • Assist Nursing Program Specialist in ensuring that all assessments are completed prior to the Interdisciplinary Resident Care Plan Committee meeting.
  • Check all documentation related to assessment for those residents scheduled for Care Plans.
  • Ensure that any incomplete documentation is finished within twenty-four (24) hours of scheduled Care Plan Conference.
  • Participate in economic utilization of supplies and ensure that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.
  • Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients such as cardiac arrest.
  • Participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
  • Assist in census and customer satisfaction.
  • Actively participate in continuing educational programs for self-development and in overall quality improvement programs.
  • Perform other related duties, including special projects, as assigned.
