As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Requirements

  • Effective verbal/written communication and telephone etiquette skills.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal WIC Program policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current science and practice of food, nutrition and dietetics; normal nutrition principles and dietary needs throughout the life cycle.
  • Ability to assess appropriate and effective feeding for women, infants and children.
  • Effectively counsel using the Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Nutrition charting techniques using the designated format.
  • Ability to use office equipment (computer, digital scale, stature board, Hemocue machine, copier, telephone, etc).
  • Computer skills: thorough knowledge, skills and ability to use Excel, Word
  • Excellent customer service skills, maintains client confidentiality and effective working relationships.
  • Ability to lift and transfer all supplies required to perform job duties.
  • Bachelor of Science degree or master's degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Home Economics with emphasis in Nutrition per WIC Federal Regulation, CFR, Title 7, Part 246.
  • This occupation requires that the incumbents meet the requirements outlined in Chapter 468, Part X, Florida Statutes, or be eligible to practice dietetics in accordance with Chapter 64B8-40 to 45, Florida Administrative Code.
  • Valid State of Florida License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist issued by the Division of Medical Quality Assurance.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program experience.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish or English and Haitian Creole.

Responsibilities

  • As a supervisor, trains, motivates, evaluates and monitors the daily work activities of the Public Health Nutritionist, Nutrition Educators, Public Assistance Specialist(s), Health Support Specialist(s), Senior Clerk(s) and a Health Support Technician. Reviews and analyzes worker productivity and performance on a monthly basis in assigned clinics.
  • Completes WIC certifications by providing nutrition assessments and counseling to clients on normal and therapeutic diets. Provides breastfeeding education and support to WIC clients.
  • Consults with health care practitioners to determine nutrition or health needs and diet prescription of WIC clients. Develops, documents and implements nutrition care plans based on assessments of nutrition needs and other current health plans, and provides follow up and referral as needed.
  • Reviews annual Q/A team audit results and completes corrective action plan addressing all clinic deficiencies. Monitors clinic key process indicators and corrective action steps to ensure goals of clinic and nutrition division are being met.
  • Prepares materials and reports pertaining to Nutrition Education as requested by Federal and State auditors. Coordinates with the Senior Human Services Program Manager regarding the Nutrition Education plan for WIC participants.
  • Conducts and/or attends health related meetings, staff meetings, committees, and work groups. Assists with outreach activities, health fairs and other community activities as needed.
