About The Position

Overview: SWE Homes is searching for a Senior Property Tax Protest Specialist to help establish and lead an internal team to achieve maximum tax savings for both the company and its customer base. This position will involve timely review of assessment notices, the ability to search and update SWE Homes’ internal databases, the preparation and review of evidence to present as part of the protest process, and the establishment as well as maintenance of relationships with various county appraisal districts. The ideal candidate is an energetic leader willing to pass on relevant industry experience while delivering strong, measurable results. This role requires prior experience working with a property tax consulting firm or property tax department. SWE Homes is searching for candidates who possess a thorough understanding of, and are willing to teach, real estate valuation methodologies as well as the property tax protest process particularly in Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee. This role will also involve assisting in various special valuation projects, and coordination with SWE Homes’ legal, acquisition, investment, and construction teams. Job Description: Review property tax assessments and tax bills, preparing appeals when necessary or advised. Reviewing prior year tax protest results and identifying areas of improvement. Establish a protest process fit for SWE Homes’ diverse portfolio. Utilize previous experience and relationships to teach the protest process to new joiners. Oversee and respond to property tax notices and requests from various taxing authorities. Assist in the preparation for protest hearings by conducting research, compiling property documentation, and ensuring adherence to hearing and appeal deadlines. Conduct tax research and stay informed about changes in tax laws and regulations. Receive and file online property assessment/value notices. Update the status of the company’s holdings when notified of changes by the company’s various departments Open to various special projects which facilitate learning and coordination with other groups Negotiate value settlements with appraisers in Texas counties and other out-of-state entities. Document and record new property acquisitions, setting up files for purchases. Verify property ownership with HCAD and other appraisal entities. Serve as a liaison with taxing authorities and counties.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in a managerial or related role within a property tax department, property tax consulting firm, county tax board, accounting firm, or real estate organization.
  • Strong knowledge of property valuation and tax protest hearings.
  • Familiarity with HCAD and other appraisal districts.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and strong math skills.
  • Typing speed of 45 WPM or higher.
  • Timely, reliable, and engaged throughout each assigned project with a passion for the industry.
  • The ability to complete a case study involving the preparation of evidence as part of a mock protest for a variety of property types
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional research and assertive negotiation skills.
  • Reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and proof of liability insurance are required.
