About The Position

The Sunita Jain Anti Trafficking Policy Initiative (SJI), based at Loyola Law School (LLS), advances policy grounded in survivor experience, rigorous research, and a commitment to anti racism, equity, and inclusion. Building on LLS’s long history of system transformation and best practice representation of trafficking survivors, SJI develops innovative policy solutions that address the root causes of human trafficking, including the systemic subordination of poor communities of color and the intersecting impacts of gender, gender identity, sexuality, disability, national origin, religion, and immigration status.As the first initiative of its kind housed within a law school dedicated to social justice, SJI works to expand survivors’ access to self determination and to shape the next generation of advocates advancing meaningful anti trafficking reform at the local, state, and national levels. Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities: The Sunita Jain Senior Jain Policy Counsel will be supervised by the Sunita Jain Policy Director and work closely with the Policy Associate to collaborate with LLS faculty, staff and students, to develop anti-trafficking local, state and national policy strategies, that promote survivor-informed and evidence-based public health and community-based alternatives to the dominant carceral approach human trafficking which often retraumatizes survivors, especially survivors with their own criminality. The Senior Policy Counsel will also supervise law students enrolled in courses and practicum associated with the Sunita Jain Initiative on legislative lawyering skills in the anti-trafficking context.

Requirements

  • JD with active membership in a state bar and/or graduate degree in public policy or related field. (those with other experience will also be considered)
  • At minimum four years’ experience working within the anti-trafficking movement including direct work with trafficking survivors and/or litigation experience.
  • Demonstrated supervision/management experience.
  • Commitment to and experience in serving the needs of vulnerable populations.
  • Commitment to social justice, anti-racism, equity and inclusion.
  • Understanding of federal and/or state legislative processes.
  • Experience working with local, state and/or national policy coalitions.
  • Experience with movement building and/or community organizing.
  • Commitment to supporting survivor leadership and engagement with diverse partners.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the delivery of written and oral presentations to diverse audiences and use of technology and social media platforms.
  • Innovative self-starter who excels both in team collaborations and independently and can nimbly adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Must be based in Los Angeles, Sacramento, or San Francisco, CA and be able to travel regularly to LLS in Los Angeles, CA for in-person team-work with faculty, staff and students
