Join the curious. Ancestry is seeking a Patent Agent to join our vibrant and growing legal team. The role will be a remote position. In this key role, the individual will be managing our growing patent portfolio, interacting directly with VPs and other senior executives, supporting end-to-end internal patent prosecution workflows, and managing outside counsel. Specifically, the individual will partner closely with senior stakeholders in our product and technology teams to develop and to execute an IP strategy that is aligned with our business objectives. We are seeking an individual with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, and a great sense of humor. This role will report to our Senior Director and Associate General Counsel of Litigation and Employment.

Requirements

  • A USPTO-registered Patent Agent.
  • A degree in engineering, life sciences, computer science, physics, or mathematics.
  • 7+ years of patent prosecution experience (law firm and/or in-house), including drafting applications and responding to Office Actions.
  • Comfortable interacting with senior executives and operating independently.
  • Experience managing outside counsel.
  • Experience with invalidity searching and patentability analysis.
  • Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Self-starter comfortable building processes, developing trainings, and prioritizing assignments in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with consumer technology, data platforms, or genomics.
  • Familiarity with portfolio strategy, pruning, and competitive landscaping.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Ancestry's patent program end-to-end, including making strategy recommendations, developing processes, and managing the patent portfolio.
  • Work directly with C-suite and other senior executives in the Product and Technology teams, run the disclosure process, and facilitate a patent review process.
  • Draft, prepare, file, and prosecute U.S. patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office, and respond to the USPTO.
  • Perform prior art searches and patentability analyses.
  • Manage outside counsel for U.S. filings.
  • Coordinate foreign filings and responses to foreign Office Actions with the assistance of outside counsel.
  • Oversee docketing and deadline management and ensure compliance with IDS, assignments, and maintenance payment requirements.
  • Develop patent training and guidance for engineers and product managers, and promote patent awareness across the company.
  • Monitor competitor IP and industry trends and provide reporting and insights to appropriate, internal stakeholders.
  • Be a team player and assist in additional tasks and assignments, as needed.
