About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Senior Ontologist to support the design, implementation, and governance of enterprise ontological frameworks. This role is critical in advancing knowledge management and interoperability initiatives across diverse domains, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and mission requirements. This position is designed to be flexible, with responsibilities evolving to meet business needs and enable individual growth.

Requirements

  • Active TS-SCI
  • 15 years of experience and a PhD degree OR BA/BS degree and 20 years of experience and be recognized within a discipline relevant to the work associated with the position.
  • Proven experience in ontology development, semantic technologies, or knowledge representation
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, metadata standards, and interoperability frameworks
  • Experience leading technical teams or projects
  • Ability to work independently on complex, abstract problems
  • Familiarity with governance processes and policy development
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into strategic insights
  • Experience with semantic web technologies (e.g., RDF, OWL, SPARQL)
  • Background in knowledge management or information architecture
  • Experience working across multiple domains or large-scale enterprise environments
  • Degree in Ontologies, or related disciplines
  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience supporting ontology governance working groups and initiatives within the DoD/IC.
  • 3+ years of proficiency in using Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) frameworks and implementing Common Core Ontologies (CCO).
  • 3+ years of experience developing and implementing ontologies for modeling specific phenomena related to DoD/IC operations or bioinformatics applications.
  • 3-5 years of advanced-level competency in SPARQL query language.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Python programming for ontology management and integration.
  • 3-5 years of experience leading both technical implementation teams and strategic planning/governance committees.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of ontologies that support organizational goals
  • Guide and mentor technical teams in building scalable, reusable ontological models
  • Ensure alignment between ontological frameworks and mission-driven requirements
  • Work independently on complex ontology structures and data modeling challenges
  • Drive interoperability and knowledge integration efforts across multiple systems and domains
  • Participate in governance and policy forums, representing technical perspectives
  • Translate strategic objectives into actionable ontological and data guidance
  • Establish best practices, standards, and governance processes for ontology development
