Requirements

  • Advanced proficiency in oral and written English and both Trigrigna and Amharic
  • Fluent English pronunciation is essential
  • Strong knowledge of medical vocabulary and terminology
  • Upon hire:
  • National Certified Medical Interpreter - National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters --or--
  • Washington Social Services Interpreter - Washington State Department of Social and Health Services
  • 1 year of interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Continuing education and/or training preferred in medical interpretation competencies, translation and medical terminology/phrases
  • 3 years of interpretation experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting
  • 2 years of experience in translation of English and source language; training and education in translation competencies preferred. Must pass a competency exam and skills assessment
  • Professional training in translation or equivalent experience
  • TMS Translation memory system (SDL Trados or Memoq) experience
  • Experience with Adobe or InDesign
  • Prior video interpreting experience
  • Experience in training adults

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and translate between English and one or more foreign languages or dialects (Trigrigna, Amharic)
  • Deliver professional-level medical interpreting, ensuring Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients receive linguistically appropriate care
  • Collaborate with SMC medical personnel to facilitate effective communication
